profound.me is seeking an Engineering Manager - Backend to own the backend engineering pillar across the flagship product and growing portfolio. You will manage the backend team end-to-end—from architecture and system design to quality, reliability, and people management—and remain hands-on when required.

You will report to the VP of Engineering and work closely with Product, Frontend, Data Engineering, and other engineering leaders to drive high-scale systems and robust APIs.

About:

As Engineering Manager - Backend, you will own the backend engineering pillar across the company's flagship product and growing product portfolio.

You will be responsible for the backend team end to end - from architecture and system design to engineering quality, reliability, delivery, and people management.

This is a highly technical engineering leadership role. You'll be expected to remain hands-on, challenge architectural decisions, review code, and step into implementation when required.

You will report to the VP of Engineering and work closely with Product, Frontend Engineering, Data Engineering, and other engineering leaders.

What you'll own:

• Backend architecture: Own HLD, LLD, system design, and architecture decisions for backend services operating at large consumer scale.
• End-to-end engineering delivery: Take backend initiatives from technical design through development, deployment, and production reliability.
• High-scale systems: Build and evolve systems handling large traffic volumes, including payments, transactions, orders, user activity, and engagement tracking.
• API & integration architecture: Define APIs, service interfaces, data contracts, and integrations across internal and external systems.
• Engineering quality: Establish strong standards around code quality, testing, observability, scalability, performance, and reliability.
• Backend engineering team: Manage, mentor, and develop backend engineers, including hiring, performance reviews, career development, and appraisal cycles.
• Hands-on technical leadership: Review PRs, debug complex issues, unblock engineers, and write production code when required.
• Cross-functional execution: Partner closely with product managers to scope, prioritize, and ship consumer-facing features across current and upcoming products.

You’ll be a great fit if:

• Have built and operated backend systems at meaningful B2C scale, ideally serving hundreds of thousands or millions of users.
• Have strong hands-on production experience with Golang and Python.
• Have independently owned High-Level Design (HLD) and Low-Level Design (LLD) for complex backend systems.
• Have experience designing distributed systems, APIs, databases, integrations, and scalable service architectures.
• Understand how to design systems that remain reliable during significant and unpredictable traffic spikes.
• Have managed engineering teams through complete people-management cycles, including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and appraisals.
• Have worked in a consumer internet, B2C, D2C, fintech, commerce, mobility, gaming, or similarly high-scale product environment.
• Can balance shipping velocity with long-term engineering quality and articulate the trade-offs behind your decisions.
• Prefer staying technically close to the work rather than operating purely as a people manager.
• Thrive in high-ownership, fast-moving environments where leaders are expected to create clarity and drive execution.
