Job summary

Qualifications

• 12–18 years of experience in software engineering or product delivery.
• 5+ years in an engineering management or team lead role.
• Proven experience managing multiple teams or squads in a product engineering environment.
• Strong operational and organisational skills for planning and execution.
• Excellent people skills for coaching engineers at different levels.
• Experience with Agile and squad-based delivery models.

We are looking for an engineering manager with strong operational leadership skills to own the day-to-day engineering organisation. This is a people-first, operations-driven management role. You will be expected to drive product delivery, provide architectural direction, foster team health, and ensure smooth execution while partnering with the publishing services function for customer outcomes.

Responsibilities:

• Delivery accountability - own the engineering team's delivery commitments; ensure engineering teams have the technical clarity they need to execute work with the squad.
• Leads to ensure sprint goals are met, blockers are resolved, and timelines are communicated proactively.
• Engineering culture - model and reinforce a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement; champion engineering best practices across the organisation.
• Monitor velocity, morale, and collaboration; intervene early to resolve challenges and celebrate successes.
• Cross-functional collaboration - represent Engineering in conversations with The Product, QA, DevOps, and Sr Program Manager, ensuring alignment on priorities and dependencies.
• Escalation handling - act as the first escalation point for engineering delivery issues and resolve conflicts within and between squads before they reach the VP.
• Hiring and onboarding - partner with the leadership to recruit senior engineers and leads; own onboarding for new hires.

Requirements:

• 12-18 years of experience in software engineering or product delivery, with at least
• 5+ years in an engineering management or team lead role.
• Proven experience managing multiple teams or squads simultaneously in a product engineering environment.
• Strong operational and organisational skills - you excel at planning, execution, and ensuring teams deliver outcomes at a sustainable pace.
• Excellent people skills - you know how to build trust, give constructive feedback, and develop engineers at different levels.
• Experience working in Agile and squad-based delivery models; familiarity with stream-aligned team structures is a strong plus.
• Strong communication skills - you can represent engineering clearly to product, clients, and leadership; you write well and run focused, productive meetings.
• High resilience and composure - you stay calm under pressure, make good decisions with incomplete information, and keep the team focused when things get difficult.

Nice to Have:

• Experience in scholarly publishing, academic content platforms, or document workflow SaaS.
• Prior experience managing teams through organisational or process transformation.
• Exposure to AI-assisted engineering tools and practices.
