Job summary

United States Digital Space LLC is seeking an Embedded Software Developer with strong IEC 61850 experience to design, develop, and maintain software for industrial automation products. The role focuses on embedded Linux platforms, real-time performance, and secure networking across gateways, IEDs, and SCADA systems.

You will work closely with hardware and test teams, implement IEC 61850 stacks, and ensure standards compliance while contributing to documentation and reviews.

Qualifications

• Proficient in C/C++ for embedded systems with IEC 61850 protocol experience.
• Experience with IEC 61850 protocol stack development or integration.
• Strong Linux development skills (user and/or kernel space).
• knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet and networking fundamentals.
• Experience with embedded debugging tools (GDB, Wireshark).
• Familiarity with version control systems (Git, SVN).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for real-time systems.
• Implement and integrate IEC 61850 protocols (MMS, GOOSE, SV).
• Develop and optimize applications on embedded Linux platforms.
• Work on communication stacks and networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP).

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Embedded Software Developer with strong experience in IEC 61850 communication protocol and Linux-based embedded systems development. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software solutions for industrial/energy automation products such as IEDs, protection relays, gateways, or SCADA systems.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for real-time systems.

• Implement and integrate IEC 61850 protocols (MMS, GOOSE, SV).
• Develop and optimize applications on embedded Linux platforms.
• Work on communication stacks, networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP).
• Perform system integration, debugging, and performance tuning.
• Develop low-level drivers and middleware components as required.
• Collaborate with hardware, system, and testing teams.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards (IEC 61850, IEC 60870,MODEBUS etc.).
• Prepare technical documentation, design specifications, and test reports.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

Strong experience in C/C++ programming for embedded systems.

• Hands-on experience with IEC 61850 protocol stack development or integration.
• Proficiency in Linux development (user space and/or kernel space).
• Experience with embedded systems debugging tools (GDB, Wireshark, etc.).
• Good understanding of networking concepts (Ethernet, TCP/IP, VLAN).
• Knowledge of real-time systems and multi-threading.
• Experience with build systems (Make, CMake, Yocto, Buildroot).

Preferred Skills

Experience with substation automation systems or power systems domain.

• Familiarity with IEC 104 / Modbus / DNP3 protocols.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity in industrial communication.
• Exposure to RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr etc).
• Experience with version control tools (Git, SVN).
• Understanding of hardware interfaces (SPI, UART, I2C).
