Engineer I - Electrical Power Systems (HAPS)

3-5

Full-Time

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and analytical Power Electronics Control Engineer to design, model, and deploy advanced control architectures for our next-generation power conversion systems. In this role, you will bridge the gap between theoretical electrical modeling and hardware implementation. You will be responsible for developing robust control algorithms for systems such as inverters, DC-DC converters, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and Maximum Power Point Trackers (MPPT). The ideal candidate will possess a strong mathematical background in control theory combined with hands-on expertise in embedded firmware development to bring these algorithms to life on physical microcontrollers.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Control Algorithm Development: Design, simulate, and implement advanced closed-loop control algorithms (e.g., PID, Field Oriented Control, Space Vector Modulation, droop control) for inverters, bidirectional DC-DC converters, BMS state estimation, and MPPT tracking.
  • System Modeling & Simulation: Build high-fidelity mathematical and behavioral models of electrical systems, power topologies, and plant dynamics to validate control loop stability and transient performance before hardware deployment.
  • Embedded Firmware Development: Translate validated simulation models into optimized, real-time embedded C/C++ code for digital signal processors (DSPs), microcontrollers (MCUs), or FPGAs.
  • Verification and Validation: Validate control firmware using simulators/ actual power hardware setups, ensuring robust performance under steady-state, transient, and fault conditions.
  • Cross-Functional Optimization: Partner with the power hardware design team to align control capabilities with component boundaries (MOSFETs/IGBTs, thermal limits) and optimize overall system efficiency.
Desired Skills:
  • Control Theory Expertise: Deep understanding of classical and modern control theory, digital control laws, state-space analysis, and loop compensation techniques (Bode plots, Nyquist criteria).
  • Modeling Tools: Proficient in system-level simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or PSIM for transient and steady-state electrical analysis.
  • Embedded Programming: Strong programming skills in embedded C/C++, with a solid grasp of bare-metal microcontrollers, peripherals (PWM configuration, ADCs, Timers), and fixed-point/floating-point math logic.
  • Power Topologies: Comprehensive technical knowledge of inverter operation, buck/boost/resonant converter dynamics, solar MPPT algorithms, and battery safety/charging logic.
Additional Skills:
  • Hands-on experience with specific microcontrollers popular in power electronics (e.g., TI C2000 Piccolo/Delfino series, STMicroelectronics STM32, or Infineon AURIX).
  • Familiarity with model-based code generation workflows using MATLAB Embedded Coder or SimCoder.
  • Familiarity with automotive or industrial communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, SPI, and Modbus.
  • Experience using high-power laboratory equipment (Programmable DC sources, regenerative electronic loads, high-bandwidth oscilloscopes) safely
Required Qualifications:
  • B.Tech/M.Tech/Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Control Systems
