Job summary

Meril is looking for a Lead Hardware Engineer to design and develop advanced electronic hardware for flexible endoscopy systems. The ideal candidate will have 8–15+ years of experience in hardware development and a background in medical imaging or related fields.

Lead Hardware Engineer – Endoscopy Systems

Job Purpose:

To design, develop, validate, and support advanced electronic hardware platforms for flexible endoscopy systems, including video processors, camera control units, illumination systems, image acquisition modules, and embedded control electronics. The role is responsible for delivering high-performance, reliable, and regulatory-compliant hardware solutions that enable superior image quality, low-latency video transmission, and robust clinical performance across gastrointestinal, pulmonary, urology, ENT, and surgical endoscopy applications.

Key Responsibilities
Hardware Architecture & System Design
  • Design and develop electronic hardware platforms for flexible endoscopy systems, video processors, camera control units, and imaging subsystems.
  • Define system-level architecture in collaboration with optics, embedded software, FPGA, mechanical, and image-processing teams.
  • Select and qualify key components including processors, FPGA/SoC devices, image sensor interfaces, memories, power management ICs, and communication modules.
  • Develop schematic designs and review multilayer PCB layouts for high-speed and mixed-signal applications.
  • Support hardware platform standardization and scalability across future product generations.
  • Drive design reviews, technical assessments, and hardware architecture decisions.
  • Develop hardware platforms supporting HD, Full HD, and 4K endoscopic imaging systems.
  • Design video acquisition and processing electronics for CMOS image sensor-based camera systems.
  • Implement interfaces for camera heads, video processors, displays, and recording systems.
  • Optimize signal paths to maximize image quality, reduce noise, and minimize latency.
  • Support integration of image enhancement and visualization technologies.
  • Collaborate with image-processing teams to achieve clinical image quality objectives.
High-Speed Digital & Sensor Integration
  • Design and validate high-speed interfaces including MIPI CSI-2, LVDS, HDMI, USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and SPI.
  • Ensure proper impedance control, differential pair routing, signal integrity, and timing performance.
  • Develop sensor interfacing circuitry including power sequencing, clock generation, synchronization, and control functions.
  • Support FPGA and processor-based imaging platforms.
  • Troubleshoot complex signal integrity and communication issues during board bring‑up and validation.
Power Electronics & Embedded Hardware
  • Design and validate power architectures including DC‑DC converters, power distribution networks, isolated supplies, and protection circuits.
  • Develop hardware supporting embedded processors, motor controllers, user interfaces, and peripheral devices.
  • Address thermal, reliability, and long‑term operational requirements.
Compliance, Safety & Reliability
  • Design hardware in accordance with applicable medical device standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support compliance with IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, and related standards.
  • Participate in risk analysis, hazard mitigation, and design verification activities.
  • Support EMI/EMC testing, electrical safety evaluations, and environmental qualification testing.
  • Implement design practices that enhance product reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability.
Verification, Validation & Documentation
  • Develop hardware verification plans, test protocols, and validation strategies.
  • Perform board bring‑up, debugging, characterization, and performance validation.
  • Support system integration, verification, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Generate and maintain design documentation including schematics, test reports, risk assessments, engineering change records, and Design History Files (DHF).
  • Support design transfer and manufacturing readiness activities.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Technical Leadership
  • Collaborate closely with software, FPGA, optics, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and clinical teams.
  • Lead hardware design reviews and mentor junior engineers.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and external development partners for component qualification and technical support.
  • Support technology evaluation and innovation initiatives for next‑generation endoscopy platforms.
  • Drive continuous improvement in design methodologies and engineering processes.
Qualifications and Experience
  • B.E. / B.Tech / M.E. / M.Tech in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Biomedical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • 8–15+ years of experience in hardware development for medical imaging, video systems, embedded electronics, or endoscopy platforms.
  • Experience in flexible endoscopy, surgical imaging, laparoscopy, camera systems, or medical visualization products is strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience in board bring‑up, debugging, validation, and product commercialization.
  • Experience working in regulated medical device development environments is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong expertise in analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design.
  • Deep understanding of video processing hardware and imaging electronics.
  • Experience with CMOS image sensor integration and camera system architectures.
  • Hands‑on knowledge of MIPI CSI-2, LVDS, HDMI, USB 3.0, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and UART interfaces.
  • Expertise in signal integrity, power integrity, PCB stack‑up design, and EMC considerations.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence, or OrCAD.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Understanding of medical device safety, reliability, risk management, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent technical documentation, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary product development teams.
