Position: Electrical Project Engineer
Department: Execution / Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC)
Reporting To: Project Manager / Senior Project Manager
Location: Site-based (Project Sites)
Job Summary
The Electrical Project Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and monitoring high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) electrical infrastructure projects. This includes High Tension (HT) sub-station erection, overhead transmission line installation, underground HT cable laying, panel erection, and complete testing & commissioning. The role requires managing engineering deliverables, field operations, subcontractor workflows, quality assurance, safety compliance, and client testing clearances to ensure project delivery on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
1. HT Substation Erection Works
- Equipment Installation: Supervise site layout, civil foundation checks, and mechanical erection of major HT switchyard and indoor substation equipment, including Power Transformers, Circuit Breakers (SF6/Vacuum), Isolators/Disconnectors, Current & Potential Transformers (CTs/PTs), Surge Arresters, and Busbars.
- Gantry & Structure Erection: Manage fabrication verification, assembly, and erection of substation gantries, support structures, and equipment supports.
- Grounding & Lightning Protection: Oversee underground earthing grid installation, main equipment grounding connections, riser connections, and lightning protection systems.
2. Cable Laying & Termination Works
- Cable Routing & Laying: Plan and execute trenching, duct bank preparation, direct burial, cable tray installation, and pulling of HT/LT power and control cables.
- Splicing & Jointing: Supervise straight-through jointing and end-termination works (heat shrink / cold shrink) performed by certified cable jointers.
- Cable Schedule & Tagging: Maintain cable schedules, ensure proper identification/ferrule tagging, and perform pre-laying insulation resistance tests.
3. Overhead Transmission Line Works
- Tower & Pole Erection: Supervise tower foundation works (piling, stub setting, concreting), tower assembly, and erection of lattice towers or monopole structures.
- Conductor & OPGW/Earth Wire Stringing: Oversee tension and pay-out stringing operations for conductors, earth wires, and OPGW, ensuring accurate sag-tension calculations and clearing tree/obstacle corridors.
- Hardware & Fitting: Supervise installation of insulator strings (disc, long rod, polymer), vibration dampers, spacers, and jumper connections.
4. Panel Erection Works
- Switchgear Erection: Coordinate alignment, leveling, joining, and busbar coupling of High Voltage (HT) Switchboards, Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS), Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), Motor Control Centers (MCC), and Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Panels.
- Control & Relay Panels (CRP): Manage installation and inter-panel wiring of CRPs, Remote Control Panels (RCP), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and SCADA interfaces.
- Secondary Wiring: Inspect panel wiring, terminal blocks, inter-panel busbar links, auxiliary supply wiring, and earth connection terminations.
5. Testing & Commissioning Works
- Pre-Commissioning Testing: Conduct and document primary and secondary testing of electrical apparatus:
- Transformers: Winding resistance, turns ratio (TTR), insulation resistance (IR), dielectric breakdown (BDV), frequency response analysis (SFRA), and vector group verification.
- Switchgear & Breakers: Contact resistance (CRM), timing tests, vacuum integrity, insulation resistance, and SF6 gas dew point/purity checks.
- Cables: Very Low Frequency (VLF) AC withstand testing, DC high-potential (Hi-Pot) testing, sheath integrity, and insulation resistance tests.
- Relays & Protection: Secondary current/voltage injection testing for numerical relays (overcurrent, earth fault, differential, distance protection) and scheme trip testing.
- Commissioning Support: Coordinate energization protocols with local electrical inspectorates, utilities, and client representatives.
Technical & Operational Management
- Engineering & Drawings: Review and interpret single-line diagrams (SLDs), schematic drawings, cable schedules, equipment layout drawings, and bill of quantities (BOQ).
- Project Scheduling: Monitor work progress against site schedules (S-curve, Gantt charts) and implement recovery plans for delays.
- Quality Assurance & Safety (QA/QC & HSE): Ensure all works conform to applicable standards (IEC, IEEE, IS, NFPA) and site safety protocols. Conduct Method Statement and Risk Assessment (RAMS) reviews for critical lifts and high-voltage operations.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination: Manage site contractors, verify measurement sheets for billing, and ensure resource allocation matches weekly targets.
- Statutory Clearances: Prepare test reports, as-built documentation, and assist in securing approvals from relevant statutory bodies (e.g., Electrical Inspectorate, Regional Power Grids).
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelors Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering (B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma).
- Experience:
- Degree Holders: 3 to 7 years of hands-on experience in HT substation construction, transmission line, or EPC projects.
- Diploma Holders: 5 to 10 years of relevant field experience.
- Certifications (Preferred):
- Electrical Supervisor / High Voltage License (issued by relevant state/national authority).
- Project Management certification (PMP or CAPM) is an added advantage.
Skills & Competencies
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of HT switchyards (up to 66kV/132kV/220kV/400kV), protection relay coordination, and testing equipment usage (Megger, Omicron, Doble).
- Software Proficiency: AutoCAD, MS Office, Primavera P6 / MS Project (basic working knowledge).
- Field Skills: Site leadership, drawing interpretation, troubleshooting electrical faults, cable scheduling, and safety permit-to-work (PTW) management.
- Soft Skills: Team coordination, client handling, clear communication, and site problem-solving skills.
