Job summary

HERE Technologies in Mumbai seeks a Director, AI/ML Engineering to design, build, and deploy scalable AI/ML platforms and workflows that enhance map editing, validation, and automation across our services.

You will mentor data scientists, define the AI strategy, lead cross‑functional projects, and partner with management and external vendors to drive responsible AI, governance, and rapid time‑to‑market.

Qualifications

• 12–18 years of industry experience with data science and analytics.
• BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
• Proficiency in Python and C++, preferably on Linux.
• Proven track record leading AI/ML projects and mentoring teams.
• Strong communication, negotiation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

What's the role?

As a Director, AI/ML Engineering, you are responsible for designing, developing, and implementing methods, processes, and systems. Your insights will directly drive actionable strategies and enhancements for our client services and product portfolio. Responsible for building intelligent editing, moderation, validation, quality assurance, and autonomous workflow capabilities that improve productivity, quality, scalability, and time-to-market across mapmaking operations. Your expertise will be crucial for mentoring teams and driving the transformation toward an AI-native map creation and maintenance ecosystem. Your key responsibilities will include:

AI/ML Strategy and Innovation

• Define and execute the organization’s AI/ML strategy, technical vision, and roadmap.
• Identify high-impact opportunities for machine learning, generative AI, automation, and advanced analytics.
• Drive adoption of Generative AI, Agentic AI, Computer Vision, LLMs, and automation technologies across map editing workflows.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, tools, platforms, and strategic partnerships.

Engineering and Platform Delivery:

• Lead the design, development, deployment, and operation of scalable AI/ML products and platforms.
• Establish best practices for MLOps, model governance, testing, observability, security, and responsible AI.
• Ensure solutions meet standards for reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.

Mentoring & Development:

• Lead, guide, and mentor data scientists across the organization, promoting best practices, continuous learning, and professional growth.
• Conduct regular workshops, tech talks, and one-on-one mentoring sessions to uplift the skills of the data science team.
• Create an environment of collaboration, encouraging cross-functional interactions and shared learnings.

Thought Leadership:

• Act as an internal and external thought leader in data analytics, staying updated with leading-edge theories, techniques, and technologies.
• Participate in the development of product or group strategies.
• Influence internal and external business/regulatory issues, providing expert insights and recommendations.

Project Management & Collaboration:

• Lead high-visibility, multi-disciplinary project teams or initiatives, ensuring timely delivery and actionable outcomes.
• Translate business needs into practical AI/ML solutions and measurable outcomes.
• Work closely with management, customers, and vendors to influence decisions and foster collaboration.

Who are you?

You are a self-driven and systematic worker and share a passion for finding ways to increase efficiency while maintaining the integrity of the data through building tools and leveraging technology. In addition, you have the following:

• BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or similar field.
• 12 to 18 years of industry working experience with expertise in data science and analytic methods such as regression, classifiers, clustering, association rules, Bayesian statistics, etc. - multiple areas
• Proficiency in Python and/or C++, preferably on Linux.
• Experience working with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, MxNet, ONNX, and Caffe.
• Proven track record of successfully leading projects.
• Strong mentoring and coaching skills with a demonstrated history of developing junior and mid-level data scientists.
• Strong negotiation skills, with a history of influencing senior management and external partners.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complex topics in a clear and engaging manner.
