Job summary

Hrvisory is seeking a mechanical engineer to lead the gearbox redesign for converting a diesel-driven reachstacker to electric propulsion. You will align the geartrain with the traction motor, assess torque-speed curves, and validate performance against current metrics.

The role involves capturing data from the physical machine, performing layout decisions, and producing DFMEA and validation plans for prototype testing and certification.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Automobile/Mechatronics engineering.
  • Experience with heavy-duty driveline design and off-highway equipment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with gear-rating standards (AGMA 2001, ISO 6336, DIN 3990) and vibration analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Capture existing transmission and drive-axle data from the machine and cross-check against OEM data.
  • Define reduction gearbox architecture and stage layout for traction motor compatibility.
  • Design gears, shafts, bearings, couplings, and lubrication systems to standard gear codes.

Job description

About the role -

We are converting a 45-tonne capacity Linde reachstacker from diesel to full electric drive. The diesel engine, its torque-converter automatic transmission, and its engine-driven hydraulics are being replaced with a set of purpose-sized electric motors a traction motor, a hydraulic pump motor, and a small auxiliary motor following the same architecture already proven by OEM electric reachstackers in this weight class.

This role owns the mechanical heart of that conversion on the traction side: designing the new reduction gearbox that replaces the torque converter and multi-speed powershift transmission, coupling it to the traction motor on one side and the machine's existing heavy-duty drive axle on the other, and validating it will deliver the same tractive effort, gradeability and travel speed the diesel machine currently achieves but at higher efficiency and with fewer moving parts. Battery, cell selection and charging infrastructure are handled by a separate work-stream and are not part of this role.

This is a live, active engineering project, not a finished design waiting to be drafted some of the input data (exact transmission and axle ratios) still needs to be captured from the physical machine. The right candidate will be comfortable making sound engineering decisions with partial information and closing gaps methodically.

Role & responsibilities
  • Capture and verify the existing transmission and drive-axle data (gear ratios, SAE housing interface, final-drive ratio) from the physical machine, cross-checked against the OEM catalogue's performance figures.
  • Define the reduction gearbox architecture (single- vs. two-speed) and stage layout (helical/planetary as appropriate), sized against the traction motor's torque-speed curve rather than an internal-combustion engine's.
  • Design gears, shafts, bearings, splines/couplings and the lubrication system, rating them to recognised gear standards (AGMA 2001 / ISO 6336 / DIN 3990) for both continuous and short-term peak/stall loading.
  • Evaluate torsional vibration and NVH risk introduced by replacing the diesel engine's flywheel/damper with a motor of different rotor inertia and stiffness.
  • Define how the torque converter's former overload/shock-protection function is replaced in coordination with motor-controller torque limiting and/or a mechanical backup.
  • Produce detailed design documentation: drawings, tolerance stacks, DFMEA, and test/validation plans.
  • Coordinate with the traction motor and hydraulic pump motor selection, and with the controls engineer integrating the new drivetrain onto the machine's existing CANbus/IQAN-based control system.
  • Support prototype build, instrumented testing, and troubleshooting on the actual machine ahead of load-test and certification sign-off.
Preferred candidate profile
  • B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Automobile, or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 510 years of hands-on gear, shaft, and bearing design experience for heavy-duty driveline applications off-highway equipment, commercial vehicles, construction/mining/material-handling machinery, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of gear-rating and driveline design standards (AGMA 2001, ISO 6336, DIN 3990) and of torsional/vibration analysis fundamentals.
  • Comfortable producing and interpreting GD&T'd mechanical drawings and managing tolerance stacks.
  • At least a conceptual, working understanding of electric traction motor torque/speed characteristics and how driveline design differs when the prime mover is a motor rather than an internal combustion engine.
  • Experience with at least one gear/driveline simulation tool (KISSsoft/KISSsys, Romax, MASTA, GT-Suite, or Simulink Driveline) and one FEA package (ANSYS or Abaqus).
  • Proficiency in a mainstream CAD platform (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or NX).
Good to Have
  • Direct experience with reachstackers, forklifts, wheel loaders, or other port/material-handling equipment.
  • Prior involvement in a diesel-to-electric or hybrid retrofit project (as opposed to clean-sheet EV design only) — this is a materially different, more constrained design problem.
  • Familiarity with e-axle/e-drive supplier hardware (Dana/Kessler, ZF, Bosch Rexroth, Twin Disc) or with EV-specific transmission concepts (clutchless/motor-synchronised shifting).
  • Exposure to reverse-engineering or as-built measurement of legacy assemblies without original OEM drawings.
  • Awareness of machinery-safety standards applicable to lifting/material-handling equipment (ISO 3691, EN 1459) and of DFMEA practice.
  • Experience leading or closely coordinating with cross-functional teams (motor/controls/hydraulics) on a single integrated product.
