Job summary

BetaNXT is seeking a seasoned IBM DB2 for z/OS DBA to lead database administration, tuning, and operational support. You will optimize performance, manage utilities, and guide data migration across environments in a high-availability setting.

Ideal candidates bring extensive DB2 experience on mainframes, strong problem-solving abilities, ITIL familiarity, and proficiency with BMC/CA tooling to ensure production reliability.

Qualifications

• 8–15 years of experience as IBM DB2 for z/OS DBA with strong performance tuning.
• Knowledge of DB2 objects: databases, storage groups, tablespaces, tables, indexes, views, aliases, native SPs, UDFs, triggers.
• Experience with schema changes to support development and participation in logical/physical design.
• Mainframe skills: JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, RACF.
• Experience with DB2 utilities and third-party tools (BMC/CA).
• Experience in data migration across multiple environments (Dev, Test, QA, UAT, Production).
• Backup, recovery, logging, and disaster recovery strategy understanding.
• Strong problem determination, root cause analysis, and production issue resolution.
• Analytical and high-pressure problem-solving skills; ITIL processes familiarity preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform DB2 for z/OS performance tuning, query optimization, and EXPLAIN analysis.
• Monitor and optimize application performance using IBM/CA tools.
• Develop automation utilities using REXX and related scripting.
• Tune DB2 and system resources; conduct capacity management activities.
• Provide SQL coding guidance and DB2 issue resolution support.
• Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation (Level 1/2) for incidents.
• Support DDF environments, workload management, and stored procedures tuning.
• Analyze and resolve locking, deadlocks, and timeout issues at multiple levels.
• Manage and troubleshoot DB2 logging environments; perform log analysis.
• Administer and optimize DB2 utilities: REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY, LOAD, RECOVER, REBUILD INDEX.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform SQL performance analysis and tuning, including query optimization, EXPLAIN analysis, access path evaluation, join strategy assessment, optimizer hints (OPTHINTs), and data normalization best practices.
• Monitor and optimize application performance using tools such as BMC MainView for DB2, BMC Apptune, CA Detector, or equivalent IBM performance monitoring solutions.
• Develop and maintain automation and operational utilities using REXX programming.
• Conduct performance and capacity management activities by tuning DB2 and system resources, leveraging monitoring, reporting, and diagnostic tools.
• Provide application development support, including SQL coding guidance, performance recommendations, and DB2 issue resolution.
• Participate in a 24x7 on-call support rotation (Level 1/Level 2) covering weekdays, weekends, and critical production incidents.
• Support DB2 for z/OS Distributed Data Facility (DDF) environments, including distributed workload management, stored procedure performance tuning, and DDF-related subsystem parameter optimization.
• Analyze and resolve DB2 locking and concurrency issues, including lock escalations, lock contention, deadlocks, and timeout situations across page, row, table, tablespace, and system levels.
• Manage and troubleshoot DB2 logging environments, including active and archive logs; utilize log analysis and scanning tools to investigate performance and recovery issues.
• Administer and optimize DB2 utilities, including REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY, LOAD, RECOVER, REBUILD INDEX, and related maintenance processes.

Required Qualifications

• 8–15 years of experience as an IBM DB2 for z/OS Database Administrator, with strong expertise in database administration, performance tuning, and application support.
• In-depth knowledge of DB2 database objects and structures, including:
• Databases
• Storage Groups
• Tablespaces
• Tables
• Indexes
• Views and Aliases
• Native Stored Procedures
• Triggers
• User Defined Functions (UDFs)
• Experience managing DB2 schema and structural changes to support application development, while participating in both logical and physical database design activities.
• Strong Mainframe technical skills, including:

• Hands-on experience with third-party DB2 administration and performance tools, including:

• Experience in data migration and data movement across multiple environments (Development, Test, QA, UAT, and Production).
• Strong understanding of backup, recovery, logging, and disaster recovery strategies.
• Proven experience in problem determination, root cause analysis, and production issue resolution.
• Demonstrated analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills, particularly in high-pressure or business-critical environments.
• Understanding of ITIL processes, including Incident, Problem, and Change Management. ITIL certification is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Informatica PowerExchange.
• Familiarity with Java, Web Services, and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) concepts.
• Experience working with ServiceNow, Remedy, or other IT Service Management (ITSM) platforms.
