JOB DESCRIPTION – CURRICULUM HEAD – MATHEMATICS

Job Summary

The Curriculum Head – Mathematics will be responsible for providing academic leadership and strategic direction for the Mathematics curriculum across the school. The role involves leading curriculum planning, implementation, review, assessment, and continuous improvement while ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.

The Curriculum Head will work closely with Mathematics teachers, coordinators, academic leaders, and school management to develop a consistent, engaging, inquiry-driven, and age-appropriate Mathematics programme that supports conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem-solving, and student achievement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, development, implementation, and review of the Mathematics curriculum across relevant grades.
  • Ensure curriculum alignment with the applicable CBSE/IB framework and school academic standards, as applicable.
  • Develop and review curriculum maps, scope and sequence, unit plans, schemes of work, and learning outcomes.
  • Ensure appropriate progression of mathematical concepts and skills across grade levels.
  • Identify opportunities for interdisciplinary and real-world connections within Mathematics.
2. Academic Leadership
  • Provide academic leadership and guidance to the Mathematics department.
  • Establish clear academic expectations and standards for teaching and learning.
  • Mentor and support Mathematics teachers in curriculum delivery and classroom practices.
  • Promote innovative, student-centred, inquiry-based, and experiential approaches to Mathematics education.
  • Encourage the use of technology and appropriate digital tools to enhance Mathematics learning.
3. Teaching & Learning
  • Monitor the quality and effectiveness of Mathematics teaching across grades.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to teachers.
  • Support teachers in developing differentiated learning strategies to address diverse student needs.
  • Promote conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, analytical thinking, and application of mathematical concepts.
  • Encourage the use of practical, collaborative, and real-life learning experiences.
4. Assessment & Student Progress
  • Lead the development and review of assessment strategies for Mathematics.
  • Ensure assessments are aligned with curriculum objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Review question papers, assignments, projects, examinations, and other assessment materials.
  • Analyse student performance data and identify areas requiring intervention or enrichment.
  • Support teachers in developing appropriate remediation and extension strategies.
5. Teacher Development & Mentoring
  • Identify professional development needs within the Mathematics department.
  • Conduct or facilitate subject-specific workshops, training sessions, and professional learning communities.
  • Mentor new and experienced Mathematics teachers.
  • Share best practices, resources, teaching strategies, and current developments in Mathematics education.
  • Encourage reflective practice and continuous professional development.
6. Academic Resources & Learning Materials
  • Oversee the development, selection, and review of Mathematics teaching and learning resources.
  • Ensure appropriate use of textbooks, digital resources, manipulatives, worksheets, projects, and supplementary materials.
  • Maintain quality and consistency of departmental academic resources.
  • Explore innovative resources and approaches that enhance student engagement and understanding.
7. Student Enrichment & Mathematical Thinking
  • Promote Mathematics beyond the classroom through competitions, clubs, projects, challenges, and enrichment activities.
  • Encourage participation in Mathematics Olympiads and other relevant academic programmes.
  • Support initiatives that develop logical reasoning, problem‑solving, creativity, and mathematical communication.
  • Identify high‑performing students and support appropriate enrichment opportunities.
8. Academic Monitoring & Quality Assurance
  • Monitor curriculum coverage and ensure academic plans are implemented as scheduled.
  • Review lesson planning, assessments, student work, and departmental documentation.
  • Identify gaps in curriculum delivery and work with teachers to address them.
  • Maintain appropriate academic records and reports.
  • Contribute to school‑wide academic reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Principal, Coordinators, Heads of Departments, teachers, and other academic leaders.
  • Participate in academic meetings and contribute to curriculum‑related decision‑making.
  • Communicate curriculum expectations and academic priorities effectively to teachers.
  • Support appropriate communication with parents regarding Mathematics curriculum, student progress, and academic initiatives.
10. Strategic Academic Development
  • Keep abreast of current trends, research, pedagogical approaches, and developments in Mathematics education.
  • Recommend improvements to curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and academic resources.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the school's academic vision and strategic goals.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and academic excellence within the Mathematics department.
Educational Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics / Mathematics Education or a closely related discipline.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics or a related subject is essential.
  • B.Ed. or equivalent teaching qualification is preferred/required as applicable to the curriculum.
  • Additional qualifications in Educational Leadership, Curriculum Development, or School Leadership will be an added advantage.
  • For an IB school environment, IB training/certification or demonstrated experience with IB curriculum frameworks will be preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum 8–12 years of relevant teaching experience in Mathematics, preferably in a reputed school.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a curriculum leadership, subject leadership, HOD, Coordinator, or similar academic leadership role.
  • Experience in curriculum planning, development, implementation, and academic quality assurance.
  • Proven experience in mentoring and developing Mathematics teachers.
  • Strong experience in assessment design, moderation, data analysis, and student progress monitoring.
  • Experience working with CBSE and/or IB curriculum frameworks will be strongly preferred.
  • Experience in leading curriculum reviews, academic projects, teacher training, and departmental initiatives.
  • Experience in integrating technology, inquiry-based learning, differentiated instruction, and real‑world applications into Mathematics education will be an advantage.
  • Strong subject knowledge and pedagogical expertise in Mathematics.
  • Excellent curriculum planning and development skills.
