Job Summary
Upwork is a global freelancing platform that connects businesses with independent professionals across a wide range of industries, including writing, editing, marketing, technology, and business services.
We are seeking a detail-oriented and language-focused Copy Editor – Grammar and Editorial Consistency to review, refine, and improve written content while preserving the original authors voice, meaning, and intended message. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and editorial conventions.
In this role, you will work with different types of written materials, including blog posts, website copy, articles, reports, business documents, marketing materials, educational content, and other professional communications. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that all assigned content meets high standards of accuracy, readability, consistency, and professionalism.
The successful candidate will identify grammatical errors, correct awkward phrasing, improve sentence flow, maintain consistent terminology, and ensure adherence to established style guides. This opportunity is suitable for experienced copy editors, freelance language professionals, proofreaders, and skilled writers who enjoy improving the quality of written communication.
Key Responsibilities
- Grammar and Punctuation Editing: Review written content to identify and correct grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation issues, incorrect verb tenses, subject-verb agreement problems, and sentence construction errors.
- Editorial Consistency: Ensure consistent spelling conventions, capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, formatting, terminology, and writing style throughout each document.
- Sentence Structure and Clarity: Improve sentence flow, eliminate unnecessary repetition, correct awkward phrasing, and restructure unclear sentences without changing the authors intended meaning.
- Style Guide Compliance: Follow client-specific editorial guidelines and recognized style guides, such as AP, Chicago, or other standards specified for individual projects.
- Proofreading and Quality Assurance: Conduct detailed final reviews to identify remaining typographical errors, formatting inconsistencies, missing words, and other editorial issues before publication or submission.
- Voice and Tone Preservation: Maintain the original authors voice, tone, and communication style while making appropriate corrections to improve professionalism and readability.
- Terminology Management: Verify that technical terms, product names, job titles, acronyms, and recurring expressions are used consistently throughout the document.
- Content Formatting: Check headings, subheadings, bullet points, numbered lists, tables, quotations, references, and paragraph spacing for consistency and readability.
- Fact and Reference Checks: Flag apparent factual inconsistencies, questionable references, contradictory statements, and unclear information for verification by the author or client rather than introducing unsupported changes.
- Document Collaboration: Communicate with clients, writers, content managers, and other project stakeholders to clarify editorial requirements and resolve questions about wording or style.
- Tracked Changes and Feedback: Use comments, tracked changes, and editing tools to explain significant corrections and make revisions easy for clients to review and approve.
- Deadline Management: Organize multiple editing assignments, prioritize urgent requests, and deliver carefully reviewed work within agreed deadlines.
- Continuous Improvement: Apply client feedback, maintain an updated understanding of editorial best practices, and refine editing processes to improve efficiency and quality.
