Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Commercial Counsel based in India.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced commercial lawyer to support complex transactions across India and, where needed, the broader APAC region. You will advise on SaaS, licensing, enterprise customer agreements, and strategic partnerships within a rapidly evolving AI and technology landscape. The role combines sophisticated legal work with close collaboration across sales, business development, operations, and global legal teams. You will help enable ambitious growth while identifying and managing commercial, regulatory, privacy, and technology-related risks. As part of a high-velocity environment, you will have significant autonomy and the opportunity to shape scalable legal processes and resources. This is a highly visible role for a pragmatic, commercially minded counsel who wants to contribute directly to responsible innovation and business growth.

Accountabilities:
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial and technology agreements, with a primary focus on go-to-market and enterprise customer transactions in India.

  • Advise sales, business development, operations, and other cross-functional teams on commercial strategies that support rapid and sustainable growth.

  • Support transactions across India and, where required, the broader APAC region, navigating varying legal and regulatory requirements across jurisdictions.

  • Monitor developments in technology, AI, data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, and related regulatory frameworks, translating these developments into practical contractual guidance and risk assessments.

  • Develop, maintain, and localize contract templates, playbooks, policies, and other legal resources to reflect regional requirements and evolving industry standards.

  • Provide clear, pragmatic, and commercially focused legal advice that balances business objectives, regulatory compliance, and risk management.

  • Partner closely with global legal and business stakeholders to resolve complex issues efficiently and facilitate high-quality commercial outcomes.

  • Contribute to the continued development and scalability of the commercial legal function, promoting a collaborative, solutions-oriented culture.

Requirements:
  • Law degree and qualification to practice law in India.

  • 7+ years of relevant post-qualification legal experience, with substantial in-house experience in technology, SaaS, or a comparable sector strongly preferred.

  • Experience working for a U.S.-based or global multinational organization from India, with direct experience supporting customers and stakeholders both within and outside the region.

  • Proven track record drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial, enterprise technology, SaaS, licensing, and strategic partnership agreements.

  • Strong knowledge of enterprise software licensing, SaaS contracting, data protection, privacy, intellectual property, and technology-related legal issues.

  • Experience advising on cybersecurity, privacy, and cross-border data transfer matters.

  • Strong understanding of commercial risk and the ability to translate complex legal considerations into practical, business-oriented recommendations.

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder-management, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and geographies.

  • Comfortable operating independently in a high-growth environment characterized by ambiguity, shifting priorities, and tight deadlines.

  • Proactive, highly accountable, commercially minded, and solutions-oriented, with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality work.

  • Genuine curiosity about artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, together with enthusiasm for applying legal expertise to innovative products and rapidly developing markets.

  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and a drive for professional excellence.

Benefits:
  • Fully remote position, with the opportunity to work from anywhere in India.

  • Particular consideration for candidates based in Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, or Hyderabad.

  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI products and complex technology transactions in a rapidly evolving global industry.

  • High-impact environment with significant autonomy, rapid experimentation, and minimal bureaucracy.

  • Opportunities to expand your responsibilities and create impact beyond the immediate scope of the role.

  • Annual discretionary professional development and learning stipend.

  • Annual discretionary stipend to support in-person collaboration and social travel with colleagues.

  • Annual company-wide offsite, with previous gatherings held in international destinations.

  • Monthly co-working stipend for employees who are not located near a primary company hub.

  • Global, highly collaborative working environment with colleagues across multiple regions.
