Job summary

Shipworkz is seeking a Chief Engineer for a contract, on-site role in Mumbai. You will oversee all technical operations, planning engine room activities, monitoring performance, and ensuring maintenance and regulatory compliance to keep vessels reliable and efficient.

Lead and mentor the engineering team, coordinate with Master and shore technical staff, and drive safety, quality, and continuous improvement across operations.

Qualifications

• Marine engineering experience on main/auxiliary engines.

Role Description

The Chief Engineer role at Shipworkz is a contract, on-site position based in Mumbai. The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing all technical operations of the vessel, including maintenance, repair, and optimal functioning of machinery and equipment. Daily tasks include planning and supervising engine room activities, monitoring performance and fuel efficiency, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and maintaining accurate technical records and reports. The role involves close coordination with the Master, shore-based technical teams, and service providers to ensure vessel reliability and readiness. The Chief Engineer also leads and mentors the engineering crew, promoting a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Strong expertise in marine engineering, including operation and maintenance of main and auxiliary engines, mechanical systems, and shipboard equipment.
• Proven experience in vessel technical management, covering planned maintenance, repairs, dry-dock preparation, and class and flag compliance.
• Solid knowledge of safety, quality, and environmental regulations (ISM, ISPS, MARPOL) and experience implementing safety management systems on board.
• Competence in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and decision-making under operational constraints, especially in high-pressure situations.
• Effective leadership and crew management skills, with the ability to train, supervise, and motivate engineering personnel from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong communication and coordination skills for working closely with masters, operations teams, procurement, and shore-based technical departments.
• Relevant maritime engineering qualifications, such as a Indian Class I Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency and prior service as Chief Engineer or Second Engineer on commercial vessels.
• Familiarity with techno-commercial aspects of vessel operations, including budgeting, cost control, and optimizing Vessel Lifetime Value.
• Ability to work on-site in Mumbai high ONGC oilfield and commit to contract-based assignments; prior experience with integrated ship management or similar environments is an advantage.
