Jupiter Hospital in Thane is seeking a Staff Nurse Cath Lab to provide direct nursing care in the OT for scheduled surgeries. You will participate in preoperative and postoperative patient care, ensure asepsis, and support the surgical team throughout procedures.

The role requires thorough preparation of instruments, maintaining inventories, and effective communication with doctors, nurses and support staff. Evening/night shifts may apply in the Cath Lab environment.

Qualifications

  • Diploma/B. Sc Nursing with Maharashtra Nursing Council registration.
  • Experience in OT nursing and perioperative care preferred.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Check the communication book and assignment register for daily duties.
  • Monitor OT equipment inventory and inform supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Receive OT bookings and document in the system.
  • Assist the surgical team and ensure patient readiness for scheduled cases.
  • Maintain CCU bed availability and ensure a safe environment for patients.
  • Oversee scrub and circulating nurse roles and ensure asepsis in the OT.
  • Prepare instrument trolley and ensure readiness for next day surgeries.

Job Summary

Staff Nurse is the first level professional responsible to provide direct nursing care applying nursing process. Ensures smooth functioning of the department at all times.

Job Profile

1. Check the communication book for any new instructions

2. Check the assignment Register to know the assignment for the day

3. Check inventory of all equipment, and instruments as per the inventory register and inform the Team Leader/Nurse Manager in case of any discrepancies noted

4. Inquire and know about the following:

  • Department Census
  • No. of cases scheduled for the day
  • No. of cases done on the previous day
  • Previous day emergency cases
  • Any Rescheduling of cases
  • Details of cases requiring special considerations (Barrier Nursing Precautions, VIPs, Relatives of Employees etc.)
  • Medico- legal Cases if any posted for surgery
  • Issues related to Support Services (Laundry/Stores/Pharmacy/Maintenance/ CSSD/Bio-Medical/Billing/Housekeeping etc)
  • Interdepartmental lending /borrowing of equipments or consumables and drugs

5. Receive OT bookings and enter in the register as well as in the system

6. Receive the implants if any required for the surgery and send to the CSSD for sterilization if needed

7. Receive the patient as per schedule

8. Carry out Nursing Assessment to have baseline data of patients assigned / received

9. Inform necessary details to the surgeon/anesthetist

10. Ensure preparedness for the scheduled cases

11. Ensure CCU bed availability when required

12. Arrange for necessary items as required

13. Carry out changes / special instructions as advised by the Surgeon/Anesthetist

14. Assist the surgical team as required

15. Monitor patients closely as per hospital protocol or as advised by the doctor

16. Complete documentation of assessment findings, investigations done, procedures carried out and the treatment given to the patient in OT according to hospital protocol

17. Ensure that adequate supply of medicines and consumables are available with the OT store for the assigned cases

18. Transfer patients from the OT to the admitting unit/CCU as per Hospital Policy

19. Ensure the comfort of the patient and family at all times

20. Ensure replacement of medicines and consumables used from the departmental stock

21. Ensure that billing of all procedures and investigations done after the case are completed

22. Complete all relevant documents

23. Maintain OT safety and provide safe environment.

24. Check the patient’s records for any changes, special orders etc. and update as needed from time to time

25. Report any special events during the shift to the Team Leader and or Nurse Manager

26. Endorse the patients to the next duty assigned staff

27. Supervise cleaning activities in the OT

28. Carry out environmental screening of OT as assigned

29. Ensure the week end cleaning of OT and it's complex every Saturday/Sunday and whenever there's an infected case

30. Carry out air-sampling and swab collection after every week end cleaning

31. Inform Nurse manager regarding any maintenance problem

32. Inform Nurse Manager if any sentinel events or any incidence occur in OT

33. Maintain a record of the lending items and check before receiving

34. Check the crash cart trolley and keep it ready always

35. Maintain good interpersonal relationship with all employees, patients, families and community

36. Ensure that patient's and or family's communications/requirements are attended or communicated to the concerned department/person

37. Additional Responsibilities during Evening and Night Shifts:

  • Prepare instrument trolley, kits and trays for the scheduled cases on the next day
  • Ensure admission of the scheduled cases for the next day
  • Call the surgeons and confirm booking and requirements for the cases
  • Reschedule cases depending on cancellations and or additions
  • Enter the surgery list on the white board
  • Send and receive the CSSD request for instruments ,consumables and linen for the next day
  • Check the expiry dates of the medicines/consumables and make arrangements to replace as per hospital policy
  • Ensure readiness of the OT for the next day/emergencies
  • Prepare/keep ready records to be maintained in the department

38. Additional Responsibilities as SCRUB NURSE:

  • Before surgery
  • Disinfection of the OT trolleys , table, equipments
  • Arrangement of instruments and linen for the surgery planned
  • Gowning and gloving
  • Draping and preparation of instrument trolley for the scheduled case
  • Collecting suture materials, needles, surgical blades, mops, gauze and sponges for the case
  • Ensure safety of equipment to be used
  • Ensuring safe positioning of the patient
  • Assist for preparation of patient for surgery
  • During the surgery:
  • Assist surgeon during the surgery
  • Hand over instruments/equipment as needed by the surgeon without delay/confusion
  • Keep an accurate count of instruments, sutures, swabs during the surgery and ensure that they are charted properly on the white board
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and act accordingly
  • After the surgery:
  • Ensure that instruments, swabs and mop counts are correct
  • Collect dressing from the circulatory nurse
  • Remove instruments from the trolley
  • Dispose all wastes as per hospital protocol
  • Ensure the comfort and privacy of the patient
  • Assist to transfer the patient to the CCU/Recovery unit
  • Send the instruments used for the surgery for washing and sterilization

39. Additional Responsibilities as CIRCULATING NURSE

  • Before surgery:
  • Receive the patient from the admitting unit
  • Ensure the readiness of the OT
  • Check all the equipments are in working order
  • Check for the temperature and humidity control settings
  • Ensure availability of required consumables and dressing materials for the surgery
  • Assist the scrub nurse for the preparation of OT for the scheduled surgery
  • Assist the surgical team for gowning and gloving
  • Assist with instrument/sponge counts and record keeping
  • During the surgery:
  • Connect the diathermy and suction to the machine
  • Record the swabs , sponges,sharps and fine instruments on the white board
  • Anticipate and provide the requirements of the team during surgery
  • Ensure maintenance of traffic control and asepsis in the OT during surgery
  • Assist with tallying of swabs , sponges,sharps and fine instruments before the closure of the cavity
  • Assist for the wound dressing
  • After the surgery:
  • Assist with the transfer of patient from the table to bed
  • Hand over the patient to the recovery nurse/CCU nurse
  • Ensure that the OT is cleaned and prepared for the next case
  • Send specimens to the LAB after entering in the HIS and Specimen
  • Complete entries in the HIS

40. Additional Responsibilities as RECOVERY NURSE

  • Prepare the recovery bed to receive the post operative patient
  • Receive the patient from the circulating nurse
  • Monitor the post operative patients and inform anesthetist as required
  • Complete all documentation as per hospital protocol
  • Shift the patient to the admitting unit after receiving the transfer order from the anesthetist
  • Hand over the patient with all documents to the admitting unit nurse

41. Training Responsibilities:

  • Participates in staff educational program
  • Help in orientation of new staff
  • Participates in planned clinical teaching / SOP Training
  • Completes Competency Assessments
  • Supervise and guide Junior Staff nurses, OT Assistants ,and Housekeeping staff

  • Very quick and prompt in handling patients and providing care
  • Competent to identify patients who become critical and to handle emergency situations (e.g. Code Blue)
  • Competent to handle different CODES used in the hospital for emergency situations
