Qualifications

  • Experience with Canadian payroll laws and tax compliance.
  • 3–5 years of payroll experience.
  • Payroll certification from a recognized association preferred.

Job Description for a Payroll Professional in Canada

A Payroll Professional in Canada is responsible for collecting, verifying, and processing payroll information to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time, while maintaining compliance with Canadian employment and tax laws.

Role Overview

Payroll professionals must ensure that all payroll-related tasks are completed efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with legal and organizational requirements.

Key Duties
  • Maintain and update employee records for attendance, leave, overtime, and other payroll-related data.
  • Calculate and verify pay and benefits including regular wages, overtime, bonuses, vacation pay, and deductions such as taxes, union dues, garnishments, and insurance.
  • Prepare and process payroll payments for regular pay, benefits, and special payments.
  • Generate and verify statements of earnings showing gross and net pay, deductions, and contributions.
  • Complete and process benefit-related documentation for pensions, medical insurance, and other programs.
  • Prepare and file required payroll documents such as year-end tax statements, Records of Employment, and other statutory filings.
  • Provide information and support to employees and management on payroll matters, benefits, and collective agreement provisions.
  • Compile and review statistical reports on pay and benefits, and reconcile payrolls to bank statements.
  • Identify and resolve payroll discrepancies promptly.
  • May develop or implement payroll policies, procedures, and processes.
Work Environment

Typical work week: 40+ hours, often in an office setting. Workplace: Indoors, environmentally controlled; may require close proximity to colleagues. Physical demands: Mostly sedentary, with repetitive keyboarding and occasional manual handling.

Education, Skills, and Experience
Education

Bachelors Degree or combination of other degrees and certifications such as completion of secondary school required; post-secondary courses in accounting, bookkeeping, or payroll administration are preferred.

Skills

Proficiency in payroll software, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, knowledge of Canadian payroll and tax laws, and ability to handle sensitive employee data. Workday, ADP, Google workspace.

Experience

3 - 5 years experience with payroll systems and compliance with Canadian employment standards, laws, regulations.

Certification

Payroll association certification required or preferred.
