Job summary

Hitachi Energy Ltd. is seeking a seasoned C&P Hardware Design Engineer for HVDC Service to design, develop, and maintain control and protection hardware for HVDC transmission projects.

You will ensure reliability, safety, and performance of critical electrical infrastructure across project sites. The role requires 7–12 years of hands-on hardware design experience, expertise in analog/digital circuits, MCUs, FPGAs, and diverse protocols (Ethernet, Modbus, IEC 61850).

Qualifications

• 7 to 12 years of hardware design experience in control and protection systems for power electronics or HVDC applications.
• Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering or electronics engineering.
• Strong analog and digital circuit design knowledge.
• Experience with microcontrollers, FPGAs, and communication protocols (Ethernet, Modbus, IEC 61850).
• Proficiency with PCB design tools and circuit simulation software.
• Experience with hardware testing and debugging equipment.
• Knowledge of power system protection principles and IEC/IEEE standards.
• Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.
• Excellent problem solving and teamwork abilities.
• Fluency in English (written and spoken).
• Willingness to travel to project sites for testing and commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and test hardware components and systems for HVDC converters (PCBs, power supplies, I/O modules, interfaces).
• Prepare detailed specifications, schematics, BOMs, and design documentation.
• Conduct hardware simulations, analyses, and verification tests.
• Collaborate with software and system engineers to integrate hardware and software into HVDC control systems.
• Support FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues during design, testing, and operation.
• Participate in design reviews and propose improvements.
• Stay updated on HVDC control technologies and standards.
• Ensure adherence to safety and quality management throughout life cycle.

The Opportunity:

As a C&P Hardware Design Engineer for HVDC Service at Hitachi, Ltd., you will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of control and protection hardware systems for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission projects. This role involves ensuring the reliability, performance, and safety of critical electrical infrastructure.

How you'll make an impact:

• Design, develop, and test control and protection hardware components and systems for HVDC converters, including PCBs, power supplies, I/O modules, and communication interfaces.
• Prepare detailed technical specifications, block diagrams, schematics, BOMs, and design documentation in accordance with industry standards and internal procedures.
• Conduct hardware simulations, analyses, and verification tests to ensure functionality, performance, and compliance with project requirements.
• Collaborate with software engineers, system engineers, and project managers to integrate hardware and software components into a complete HVDC control system.
• Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities for HVDC projects.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hardware-related issues during design, testing, and operational phases.
• Participate in design reviews and provide technical expertise to improve existing designs and develop innovative solutions.
• Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and standards in HVDC control and protection.
• Ensure adherence to safety regulations and quality management systems throughout the design and development lifecycle.

Your background:

• Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
• You should have 7 to 12 years of experience in hardware design and development, specifically with control and protection systems for power electronics or HVDC applications.
• Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design principles, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet, Modbus, IEC 61850).
• Proficiency with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, PADS) and simulation software (e.g., SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink).
• Experience with testing and debugging hardware, including the use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other test equipment.
• Knowledge of power system protection principles and relevant international standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE).
• Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
• Ability to travel to project sites for testing, commissioning, and support as required.
