Job Description Head - Renewable Energy Business Development Project Origination Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced and commercially driven Head - Renewable Energy Business Development Project Origination to lead the identification, evaluation, origination, and acquisition of renewable energy opportunities.
The role will be responsible for developing short- and long-term growth strategies, building a high-quality project pipeline, identifying attractive renewable energy opportunities, leading bid and tender processes, evaluating project economics, and ensuring that new projects meet strategic objectives and risk-adjusted return expectations.
The position will work closely with cross-functional teams including Finance, Legal, Regulatory, Engineering, Procurement, Execution, and Asset Management to drive informed investment decisions and successful project development.
1. Business Strategy Market Development
- Develop and execute short- and long-term growth strategies aligned with renewable energy market dynamics, regulatory developments, and business objectives.
- Identify new business opportunities across renewable energy and power markets.
- Develop strategies for emerging renewable energy segments including wind, solar, hybrid projects, BESS, pumped hydro, hydro, offshore wind, and other emerging technologies.
- Identify opportunities for power sales to utilities and other eligible offtakers and develop strategies to secure long-term offtake opportunities.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, commercial models, market structures, and regulatory developments to identify future growth opportunities.
2. Project Origination Pipeline Development
- Lead end-to-end project origination from opportunity identification and market assessment through feasibility, bid participation, acquisition, and PPA/offtake closure.
- Identify and shortlist strategic tenders and project opportunities based on commercial attractiveness, strategic fit, competitive positioning, and risk-adjusted returns.
- Evaluate greenfield and development opportunities across wind, solar, hybrid, storage, hydro, and other renewable energy projects.
- Provide strategic inputs for site identification and development, including connectivity, land, resource assessment, infrastructure availability, and other critical project parameters.
- Build and maintain a robust pipeline of commercially viable renewable energy opportunities.
3. Market Intelligence Competitive Benchmarking
- Track renewable energy market developments, tender pipelines, policy changes, regulatory developments, and emerging commercial models.
- Conduct cost benchmarking across development, equipment, EPC, transmission, land, financing, and other key project cost components.
- Monitor competitor portfolios, bidding strategies, pricing, technology choices, project configurations, and market positioning.
- Develop actionable market and competitive intelligence to support business and investment decisions.
- Identify risks and opportunities arising from changes in market dynamics, competition, technology, policy, and regulations.
4. Policy Advocacy Regulatory Engagement
- Engage with relevant regulators, government authorities, utilities, industry bodies, and other stakeholders to understand policy and regulatory developments.
- Provide strategic inputs into policy advocacy initiatives aimed at creating commercially viable and favourable tender conditions.
- Assess the impact of policies, regulations, tender structures, and market mechanisms on project economics and business strategy.
- Identify regulatory risks and opportunities and provide recommendations to senior management.
5. Bid Management Commercial Evaluation
- Lead the end-to-end bid management process for shortlisted tenders and project opportunities.
- Coordinate with Finance, Legal, Regulatory, Engineering, Execution, Procurement, and Asset Management teams to develop competitive and commercially viable bids.
- Evaluate project economics including project costs, tariffs, revenues, financing assumptions, returns, and key commercial risks.
- Develop bid strategies aligned with approved investment criteria and risk-adjusted return requirements.
- Lead commercial negotiations and optimise bid structures to maximise project value.
6. Project Feasibility Investment Evaluation
- Lead techno-commercial feasibility assessments for new project opportunities.
- Evaluate project cost structures, revenue assumptions, financing requirements, project timelines, regulatory conditions, and execution risks.
- Work closely with Finance teams to assess IRR, NPV, payback, sensitivities, and overall investment attractiveness.
- Establish project cost, tariff, and return benchmarks to support investment decisions.
- Monitor project economics from bid award through financial close and COD, ensuring continued alignment with approved business cases.
7. Budget Management Project Controls
- Establish and monitor project budgets to ensure approved costs, returns, and timelines are achieved.
- Work with Finance and project execution teams to monitor cost performance and identify deviations from approved budgets.
- Ensure project economics remain aligned with approved return thresholds throughout the development and execution lifecycle.
- Monitor commercial and contractual obligations and identify risks that could impact project returns or COD timelines.
- Drive timely corrective actions where cost, schedule, commercial, or regulatory risks arise.
8. Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with internal stakeholders across Finance, Legal, Regulatory, Engineering, Procurement, Execution, Asset Management, and other functions.
- Coordinate cross-functional inputs to optimise project configuration, cost structures, timelines, and overall project value.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with utilities, government authorities, regulators, developers, investors, technology providers, consultants, and industry participants.
- Represent the organisation in relevant industry forums, stakeholder discussions, and commercial engagements.
- Leverage market relationships and industry intelligence to strengthen project origination and competitive positioning.
9. Management Reporting Investment Recommendations
- Prepare comprehensive project opportunity assessments for senior management and investment committees.
- Present financial, commercial, technical, regulatory, competitive, execution, and cost-related aspects of potential projects.
- Clearly identify key assumptions, risks, sensitivities, dependencies, opportunities, and value drivers.
- Provide recommendations on whether to pursue, modify, defer, or reject potential opportunities.
- Develop consistent decision frameworks for evaluating projects on a risk-adjusted basis.
- Ensure all material risks and sensitivities are transparently communicated before investment or bid decisions.

Candidate Profile Education
- Bachelor s degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline.
- MBA/PGDM in Finance, Strategy, Business Management, or a related field would be an advantage.
Experience
- 12+ years of relevant experience in Renewable Energy, Power, Infrastructure, Project Development, Business Development, Project Origination, or related sectors.
- Strong experience in renewable energy project development, tendering, bid management, commercial evaluation, and project acquisition.
- Experience across wind, solar, hybrid, BESS, hydro, pumped hydro, offshore wind, or other renewable energy technologies would be highly desirable.
- Proven experience in evaluating project economics and managing projects from origination through PPA award / financial close / COD.
