Job summary

CleverTap is seeking a Java backend engineer to design and implement durable Temporal workflows that automate internal processes across IT, HR, Finance, Sales, Marketing and Engineering. You will integrate with various SaaS APIs, build long-running stateful workflows, and extend capabilities with LLM-backed steps, all while ensuring observability and reliability.

No prior Temporal experience is required; mentorship and hands-on learning will guide pattern usage, versioning, and determinism

• Working knowledge of distributed-systems basics: retries, idempotency, timeouts.

• Make workflows observable so teams can see execution status and bottlenecks.
• Engage with process owners to scope work and document workflow behavior.

About the role:

We're automating CleverTap's internal processes - the repetitive, multi-step work that today gets done manually across IT, Human Resources, Finance, Sales, Marketing and Engineering. You'll build these automations as durable workflows in Java on Temporal. Some workflow steps call LLMs to classify, summarise, derive intent or draft content; the rest is solid backend engineering - integrating SaaS applications with human-in-the-loop (where applicable).

You will be working on durable distributed systems - retries, idempotency, state that lives for days and in-flight workflows that must survive deployments.

You do not need prior Temporal experience. We are hiring for Java fundamentals. You'll pick up Temporal patterns fast - our code review hooks run a Temporal developer skill that guides you on workflow patterns, versioning, and the determinism rules that trip up every newcomer. In this role, you will also get an opportunity to learn Temporal and LLM integration on the job, with mentorship and AI tooling.

What will you do:

• Build Temporal workflows and activities in Java that automate internal processes end to end

• Glue the systems that internal processes touch - internal services, third-party SaaS APIs, databases, queues - and handle each one's failure modes

• Add LLM-backed steps where they make sense, with retries, timeouts, cost controls, and human approval when confidence is low or is required for compliance purposes

• Deal with long-running state properly: signals, waits, compensation for partial failures, versioning workflows already in flight

• Make workflows observable, so the teams that own the processes can see what ran, where it's stuck, and why

• Talk to the people whose processes you're automating, scope the work with them, and document how the workflow behaves

What are we looking for?

Must have:

• 2+ years of professional Java development, with production code you can talk through in detail

• Solid grasp of concurrency and error handling

• Working knowledge of distributed-systems basics: retries, idempotency, timeouts, and why "just retry it" is sometimes wrong

• Experience integrating with APIs you don't control

• Clear communication with non-engineering stakeholders - much of this job is understanding how a process really works from the person who does it

• Willingness to learn Temporal quickly and interest in using LLMs in backend systems

Good to have:

• Any exposure to workflow or job orchestration - Temporal, Cadence, Airflow, Step Functions, Camunda, or a homegrown state machine you had to maintain

• Experience calling LLM APIs from code

• Automations are debuggable by their owners, not just by you
