Qualifications

Role & responsibilities

Senior Backend / Microservices Developer (7 - 9 years' experience) to design, develop and deploy scalable high-performance backend services supporting Croma.com and its digital customer journeys. The role involves building reliable APIs and microservices that connect the digital experience with Croma's broader technology ecosystem, including commerce, product, inventory, pricing, order management, payment, customer and other enterprise platforms.

The candidate should have strong hands‑on experience in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs and microservices, with a good understanding of distributed systems, databases and event‑driven architecture, microservices design patterns, monitoring, and exposure to cloud‑native technologies

Primary Responsibilities

1. Backend & Microservices Development

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable microservices-based applications.
• Strong hands‑on expertise in developing REST APIs with Java / J2EE, Spring Boot.
• Build backend services supporting customer journeys such as product discovery, cart, checkout, order, payment, customer and post‑order services.
• Build and manage RESTful APIs and service-to-service communication.
• Understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
• Take ownership of services from design and development through production
• Make appropriate technology and design decisions within established architecture.

2. Distributed Systems & Integration

• Handle authentication, authorization, API security, and data protection.
• Implement messaging platforms like Kafka or equivalent.
• Understand and address challenges associated with distributed transactions and asynchronous processing.
• Implement appropriate patterns for retries, timeouts, error handling and idempotency.
• Integrate with enterprise platforms such as OMS, SAP, PIM, CRM and Inventory systems.

3. Performance & Scalability

• Design services for high availability, scalability and reliability.
• Identify and address performance bottlenecks.
• Work with SQL and NoSQL databases and optimize queries where required.
• Use caching technologies where appropriate.
• Contribute to capacity, resilience and performance improvements.
• Design appropriate logging, monitoring and observability into services.
• Identify scalability, performance, security, and reliability concerns during design.
• Participate in architecture/design discussions and provide technical solutions.

4. Engineering Quality

• Implement test automation frameworks and ensure adequate coverage across systems.
• Write clean, maintainable and reusable code.
• Develop unit, integration and component tests and contribute to automated testing.
• Participate in code reviews and follow engineering standards.
• Champion technical debt reduction and platform modernization initiatives.
• Troubleshoot production issues and participate in RCA and remediation.

5. Cloud & DevOps

• Build, maintain CI/CD pipelines, deploy applications on AWS / Azure / GCP.
• Develop containerized applications using Docker.
• Work with Kubernetes/container platforms and cloud environments.
• Collaborate with DevOps/SRE teams on application deployment, monitoring and reliability.

6. AI-Assisted Development

• Ability to effectively use tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude or equivalent for code generation, refactoring, debugging, test creation and documentation.
• Should be able to review, validate, test and secure AI-generated code rather than relying on AI output without engineering judgement

Preferred candidate profile

• 7+ years of experience in backend development, APIs, microservices and scalable applications.
• Experience in the Retail / Ecommerce domain is desirable
• Preference for engineers who effectively use AI-assisted coding and development tools to improve engineering productivity.
