ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify and prioritise automation opportunities using operational effort, failure demand, risk, control gaps
and business value.
- Build reusable automation for provisioning, configuration, patching, backup validation, remediation,
tagging, reporting, evidence collection, access workflows and service operations.
- Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code (primarily Terraform) and configuration-as-code components
using approved patterns, source control, peer review and automated testing.
- Integrate automation with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI,
Jenkins, Azure DevOps), IT service management tools, monitoring, security and collaboration tooling
through supported APIs and event-driven patterns.
- Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and operational automation using tools such as
GitHub, GitLab, Jenkins and Azure DevOps.
- Use configuration management and automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform and scripting languages to
enforce consistency across environments.
- Apply secure engineering practices, including least privilege, secrets management, dependency control,
logging, input validation and rollback or recovery design.
- Ensure every production automation has clear ownership, documentation, monitoring, exception handling,
support procedures and measurable outcomes.
- Partner with operations teams to remove repetitive work while preserving appropriate human approval for
high-risk or irreversible actions.
- Create operational dashboards and evidence that show automation coverage, success rate, time saved,
control performance and failure trends.
- Troubleshoot automation failures and underlying platform issues; conduct root-cause analysis and improve
reliability.
- Contribute reusable patterns, coding standards and technical guidance to internal and outsourced DevOps
teams.
MUST-HAVE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- 47 years of practical experience automating cloud or infrastructure operations.
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform: AWS or Azure (experience in both is desirable
but not mandatory).
- Strong proficiency in Terraform for infrastructure-as-code; experience writing, maintaining and versioning
Terraform modules.
- Strong scripting or software engineering capability in Python, PowerShell, Bash or a comparable language.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and workflows — at least one of: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins or Azure
DevOps.
- Working knowledge of Git-based source control and branching strategies.
- Understanding of APIs, event-driven automation, observability and monitoring (e.g. CloudWatch, Azure
Monitor, Datadog, Grafana).
- Familiarity with ITSM processes and tools (e.g. ServiceNow, Jira Service Management) for integrating
automation with service operations.
- Knowledge of secure secrets handling (e.g. HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault).
GOOD-TO-HAVE SKILLS
- Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible.
- Exposure to container platforms (Docker, Kubernetes / ECS / EKS / AKS).
- Experience with both AWS and Azure cloud platforms.
- Relevant cloud certification (e.g. AWS Solutions Architect Associate, Azure Administrator, Terraform
Associate).
- Relevant DevOps or automation certification (e.g. AWS DevOps Engineer, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert).
- Experience with policy-as-code tools (e.g. OPA, Sentinel, AWS Config Rules, Azure Policy).
- Understanding of FinOps principles and cloud cost optimisation.
COMPETENCIES
- Engineering discipline – Readable code, tests, documentation, versioning and safe deployment.
- Problem solving – Strong problem decomposition and ability to simplify inconsistent manual processes
before automating them.
- Outcome focus – Bias toward measurable outcomes rather than automation for its own sake.
- Collaboration – Collaborative working style with patience for operational users and a willingness to support
what is built.
- Continuous learning – Curiosity, continuous learning and constructive challenge of inefficient or unsafe
practice.
