Role Overview
The Structural Engineer is responsible for preparing or coordinating the execution documentation, including layouts, calculation notes and drawings, for the Structural department of the Metal Business.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply the Design Process.
- Check the completeness of inputs received from the Technical Project Manager before proceeding.
- Issue execution documentation (layouts, calculation notes, drawings) in compliance with internal standards and contractual requirements.
- Perform analysis and design calculations of structures using Indian and international codes, including Indian Code, Indian Sections and International Standards.
- Conduct structural analysis and design calculations using STAAD‑PRO.
- Calculate foundation loads, foundation load data, and foundation bolt designs.
- Size base plates.
- Create and maintain a Tekla 3D model (workshop drawings, bolts, spools, holes, etc.).
- Generate 2‑D AutoCAD fabrication drawings from the Tekla model for general assembly and sub‑assemblies.
- Prepare basic and detailed engineering drawings.
- Prepare and submit calculation reports.
- Issue BOMs for equipment purchasing.
- Update standard technical documentation of the Structural Department.
- Keep competencies updated to meet Metal Sector needs.
- Proactively participate in continuous improvement and REX processes.
- Coordinate with mechanical, furnace and technical project management teams.
- Create and verify engineering documents as per the QMS and Design Approval Matrix.
- Assist manufacturing with design queries.
- Communicate with customers and participate in technical discussions.
- Coordinate with erection and commissioning teams for site support.
Education & Experience
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in an engineering context for an engineer position; 15+ years for a lead position.
- At least the last 5 years in a similar role.
- Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, BSc in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in 2‑D CAD (AutoCAD) and 3‑D CAD (SmartPlant, Inventor, Tekla, STAAD‑PRO).
- Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access).
- Experience with mechanical drawings (cutting, machining, welding, assembly).
- Familiarity with bill of materials.
- Knowledge of mechanical properties of structural steel elements (ASTM, EN, IS).
