JOB DESCRIPTION

AGM - Quality

Integrated TMT Steel Plant

Department: Quality Assurance & Control

Reports to: GM / VP Operations

ROLE SUMMARY

INCOMING MATERIAL QUALITY

• Conduct suitability tests for raw materials, additives and flocculants before approval for plant use.
• Oversee physical and chemical analysis of iron ore, bentonite, limestone, dolomite, burnt lime, hydrated lime and other inputs, using wet classical methods (titrimetric, gravimetric) and instrumental methods (XRF, OES, AAS, CS analyser).
• Evaluate suitability of imported and Indian coal (proximate and ultimate analysis, CV, ash fusion, sulphur, phosphorus, CSR/CRI where applicable) and coke for blast furnace use.
• Define raw material specifications, sampling plans and acceptance criteria; rate and develop vendors.

IN-PROCESS QUALITY

• Monitor quality across the pellet plant, blast furnace, gasifier, steel melt shop and rolling mill.
• Blast furnace: burden quality (sinter/pellet/ore, coke, flux), hot metal chemistry (Si, S, P, C), slag basicity and chemistry, and impact on downstream steel quality.
• Monitor producer gas quality (composition, CV, tar, particulates) and recommend adjustments to optimise production and fuel efficiency.
• Rolling mill: billet/bloom quality, reheating furnace parameters, rolling practice, and quenching and self-tempering (QST) control for the required rim-core structure and mechanical properties.
• Drive RCA and CAPA (8D, 5 Why, Fishbone) on deviations; use SPC and process capability analysis to reduce variation and rejection.

FINISHED PRODUCT QUALITY

• Ensure TMT bars (Fe 500/500D/550/550D/600) meet IS 1786, BIS and customer requirements: chemistry, YS, UTS, elongation, UTS/YS ratio, rib geometry, weight tolerance, bend/rebend and rim-core microstructure.
• Manage product release, hold and rejection decisions, heat-to-bundle traceability and BIS licence compliance (marking, audits, returns).

LABORATORY MANAGEMENT

• Maintain and manage the laboratory (chemical, physical, metallurgical, coal and raw material sections).
• Ensure calibration, preventive maintenance, reference standards and proficiency testing per NABL / ISO/IEC 17025.

CUSTOMER QUALITY & COMPLAINTS

• Resolve quality issues of internal customers (production, rolling, dispatch) and external customers (dealers, contractors, institutional buyers); lead investigations, site visits and timely closure.
• Provide technical support to customers and the sales team.

SYSTEMS, SOPS & COMPLIANCE

• Ensure all SOPs and work instructions are documented, current, implemented and followed.
• Lead internal and external audits (ISO 9001, BIS, NABL, ISO 14001/45001) and close findings on time.
• Drive continuous improvement (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, TQM) and cost-of-quality reduction.

PEOPLE & LEADERSHIP

• Lead and develop chemists, metallurgists and technicians; set KPIs and training plans; coordinate with Production, Maintenance, Purchase, Sales and Stores.
