Job Purpose
We are looking for a passionate and learner-focused Assistant Professor of Chemistry to facilitate foundational Chemistry learning for first-year engineering students.
The role involves making Chemistry simple, practical, relevant, and connected to engineering applications through engaging classroom teaching, laboratory experiences, demonstrations, problem-solving, and technology-enabled learning.
The faculty member is expected to help students build a strong scientific foundation while developing curiosity, analytical thinking, experimental skills, and an understanding of how Chemistry contributes to engineering and everyday life.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching & Learning Facilitation
- Facilitate engaging and concept-oriented Chemistry classes for first-year engineering students.
- Deliver Engineering Chemistry concepts in a simple, structured, and application-oriented manner.
- Prepare lesson plans, presentations, learning resources, assignments, and assessments.
- Use learner-centric and activity-based teaching methods.
- Identify students requiring additional academic support and provide appropriate guidance.
2. Engineering Chemistry & Application-Based Learning
- Connect Chemistry concepts with engineering, technology, industry, and everyday applications.
- Encourage students to understand the practical relevance of topics rather than relying only on memorisation.
- Use real-world examples, case studies, demonstrations, and problem-solving activities.
- Develop interdisciplinary connections between Chemistry and engineering domains.
3. Chemistry Laboratory
- Conduct and supervise Chemistry laboratory sessions effectively.
- Demonstrate experiments and ensure students understand the underlying scientific principles.
- Guide students in laboratory procedures, measurements, observations, calculations, and analysis.
- Ensure appropriate laboratory safety practices are followed.
- Maintain laboratory records, equipment requirements, and related documentation.
4. AI-Enabled Learning
- Use appropriate AI and digital tools to enhance Chemistry teaching and learning.
- Develop AI-assisted learning materials, quizzes, explanations, question banks, and revision resources.
- Introduce students to responsible use of AI for learning and academic exploration.
- Encourage students to verify AI-generated information against scientific principles and reliable sources.
5. Student Mentoring
- Mentor first-year students in their academic and personal learning journey.
- Help students develop scientific thinking, study habits, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Monitor student academic progress and provide timely feedback.
- Encourage participation in science exhibitions, competitions, technical activities, and institutional events.
6. Research & Academic Development
- Participate in research and academic activities in Chemistry and interdisciplinary areas.
- Contribute to publications, conferences, workshops, and faculty development programmes.
- Encourage students to undertake simple Chemistry-based projects and experiments.
- Continuously update subject knowledge and teaching practices.
7. Academic & Institutional Responsibilities
- Prepare course files, lesson plans, assessment records, laboratory records, and other academic documentation.
- Participate in departmental meetings and academic planning.
- Contribute to curriculum delivery, internal assessments, examinations, and quality initiatives.
- Support institutional events, student activities, workshops, seminars, and other responsibilities assigned by the department.
Preferred Areas of Expertise
Candidates with knowledge or teaching experience in one or more of the following areas will be preferred:
- Engineering Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
- Environmental Chemistry
- Materials and Polymer Chemistry
- Electrochemistry
- Water Chemistry and Treatment
Additional advantage: Familiarity with laboratory-based teaching, digital learning tools, AI-enabled learning resources, and application-oriented teaching.
Qualification & Experience
- Minimum qualification: M.Sc. in Chemistry / Applied Chemistry or relevant discipline from a recognised institution.
- Ph.D. / M.Phil. will be an advantage, subject to applicable norms.
- Candidates with relevant teaching, laboratory, research, or industry experience will be preferred.
- Freshers with strong subject knowledge, communication skills, and a genuine interest in teaching may also be considered based on institutional requirements.
