Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automation Engineering.
• 8+ years of experience in mechanical design and automation for infra, industrial or airport projects.

• Familiarity with planning and simulation software and aviation security/standards (IATA/ICAO).

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Airport Systems Expert specializing in Baggage Handling Systems (BHS) to support the planning, design, and modernization of baggage handling systems for airport development projects. The role involves the technical planning and design of integrated baggage handling solutions for airport terminals, ensuring efficient baggage processing, passenger service excellence, and compliance with applicable aviation regulations and industry best practices.

The successful candidate will work closely with airport planners, terminal planners, architects, airlines, airport operators, system vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop baggage handling solutions throughout all project phases, from concept development and capacity planning through detailed design, construction, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness. The individual will be responsible for ensuring that baggage systems are designed to meet current and future passenger demand, operational requirements, security regulations, and airport development objectives.

The role requires strong technical expertise in baggage handling technologies, airport operations, system integration, and terminal planning principles. The candidate will contribute to the successful delivery of airport expansion, modernization, rehabilitation, and greenfield airport projects by developing innovative, efficient, and scalable baggage handling solutions that optimize passenger experience and airport operational performance.

Your role

• Lead the planning and design of baggage handling systems for airport terminals, including outbound, inbound, transfer, and reclaim systems. Develop design concepts and technical solutions that support operational efficiency, passenger service requirements, and future airport growth.
• Perform system capacity assessments, throughput calculations, and operational analyses to determine system requirements. Evaluate peak-hour capacities, baggage processing rates, and operational resilience to support terminal planning and expansion projects.
• Develop and coordinate baggage screening system designs in accordance with applicable security regulations and airport authority requirements. Ensure seamless integration of screening equipment, baggage transport systems, and operational processes.
• Plan and design Early Baggage Storage systems, sortation systems, destination-coded vehicle systems, tilt-tray systems, cross-belt sorters, or other automated baggage handling technologies as appropriate to project requirements. Evaluate alternative technologies and recommend optimal solutions.
• Coordinate the spatial integration of baggage handling systems within airport terminals. Develop equipment layouts, plant room requirements, conveyor alignments, screening areas, make-up halls, reclaim facilities, and maintenance access strategies while optimizing terminal functionality.
• Support the development and review of baggage flow simulations, operational modelling, bottleneck assessments, and performance studies. Evaluate system efficiency, redundancy, maintainability, and operational flexibility under varying traffic scenarios.
• Prepare technical specifications, performance requirements, employer's requirements, design criteria, tender documentation, and technical evaluation criteria for baggage handling system procurement. Support vendor evaluations and technical bid assessments.
• Coordinate baggage handling systems with terminal architecture, structural systems, MEP services, ICT infrastructure, airport operational systems, security systems, airline operations, and other airport technologies. Manage interface requirements to ensure successful system integration.
• Collaborate with airport operators, airlines, security authorities, system suppliers, terminal planners, and engineering teams to capture operational requirements and develop effective baggage handling solutions. Facilitate technical workshops and design reviews with key stakeholders.
• Conduct assessments of existing baggage handling systems, identify operational constraints, evaluate system condition, and develop upgrade strategies for airport modernization and expansion programs. Recommend improvements to enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and capacity.
• Monitor emerging baggage handling technologies, automation solutions, digital twins, predictive maintenance tools, and smart airport initiatives. Promote innovative and sustainable design approaches that improve baggage system performance and long-term operational value.

About you

• Bachelor'S or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Automation Engineering.
• 8+ years of experience in mechanical design and automation. Experience in commercial, industrial, infrastructure, or airport projects (preferred).
• Strong hands-on experience with Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit. Awareness of Civil 3D for coordination purposes.
• Familiarity with planning and simulation software.
• Familiarity with IATA, ICAO, and airport authority requirements related to baggage handling operations.
• Understanding of airport operational concepts, passenger processing systems, and terminal planning.Good understanding of Electrical supply and electrical systems.
• Experience working with baggage handling system suppliers and integrators.
• BIM workflows and data management.
• Experience working on UK / Middle East / International aviation projects is preferred.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative BIM team.
• Knowledge of ACC / ProjectWise, Navisworks, and clash detection workflows.
• Experience in airport terminal development, expansion, and modernization projects.
