Job description

At Jacobs, we are challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission‑critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting‑edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

You are a traffic or transport engineer with a passion for creating safer, more sustainable and better‑designed streets and places. You bring strong technical expertise, sound professional judgment and a solutions‑focused mindset to complex urban transport challenges. You enjoy working collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams and engaging constructively with clients and stakeholders. Whether developing active travel schemes, re‑allocating road space, or shaping high‑quality urban streets, you are motivated by delivering designs that respond to their context and make a tangible difference to communities.

You take pride in the quality of your work, are confident working across all project stages, and enjoy mentoring others while continuing to develop your own technical leadership.

About The Opportunity

The Jacobs Cities & Places team works across a wide range of scales, from regional and city planning to neighbourhoods, streets and individual buildings, using an integrated design approach. Our aim is to bring planning, design and delivery together in a way that is practical, coordinated and responsive to the needs of clients and communities.

Our business unit brings together engineers, architects, surveyors, urban designers, project managers and transport planners. By working collaboratively across disciplines, we deliver clear, considered and implementable design solutions for clients in Ireland, the UK and internationally.

We are seeking an experienced professional to join our Active Travel & Urban Transport team, working on a hybrid basis from our Dublin or Cork office and client locations. The role will suit someone with experience in sustainable transport, placemaking or road space re‑allocation projects, who is comfortable operating within multi‑disciplinary teams across different geographies.

Your Role Will Include
  • Leading the technical development and delivery of traffic engineering and active travel projects
  • Producing and reviewing high‑quality designs, drawings, reports and tender documentation
  • Applying Irish design standards and guidance to develop practical, context‑led solutions
  • Supporting project and client management, including programme, resources, quality and commercial performance
  • Engaging effectively with clients, local authorities and stakeholders
  • Checking and reviewing deliverables, ensuring design consistency and technical assurance
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members and contributing to a collaborative team culture
  • Supporting business development activities, bid preparation and client engagement
Here’s what you’ll need
  • Degree‑qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or transport‑related discipline
  • Technical background in traffic engineering, including
    • Junction and road link analysis and modelling
    • Traffic signals design
    • Road markings and traffic sign design
    • Pavement, drainage and utilities design
    • Preparation of tender documents and works specifications
  • Experience in urban streets, active travel, bus priority, public transport and/or public realm schemes
  • In‑depth knowledge of key Irish standards and frameworks, including DMURS, Cycle Design Manual, Capital Works Management Framework, Transport Appraisal Framework and NTA Project Approval Guidelines, together with knowledge of relevant TII standards and sustainable transport policy
  • Proven experience delivering projects through all design stages, from concept to detailed design and delivery support, including site supervision
  • Ability to manage workload effectively while mentoring junior staff and contributing to team development
  • Experience contributing to bids, client engagement and awareness of emerging trends and best practice
  • A clear commitment to knowledge sharing, staff development and technical leadership
What’s in It for You
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Flexible and hybrid working options
  • Pension scheme and wellbeing benefits
  • Generous annual leave
  • Paid professional membership fees and CPD support
  • Opportunities to work on high‑profile, city‑shaping projects
  • A collaborative, inclusive culture with clear pathways for career development in Ireland and across Jacobs globally
