Job Description
TRS are looking for a Senior Electrical QS or Estimator to join an established Electrical Services Company based in Bandon, Co. Cork. The Senior Electrical QS / Estimator will take ownership of and help develop the company's estimating and commercial function. This is a senior role combining electrical estimating, quantity surveying, commercial management and technical input across a varied portfolio of industrial, commercial, healthcare, maintenance and E&I projects. The successful candidate will be involved from initial enquiry and tender stage through project handover, live commercial management and final account. Strong electrical technical knowledge is essential, with broader M&E, Building Services, E&I or multidisciplinary project experience considered a distinct advantage. The role will work closely with the Directors, Contracts Managers, site teams, procurement, clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the estimating and QS function, supporting the continued development of commercial processes and standards.
- Manage the full tender lifecycle from initial enquiry through take-off, pricing, tender review, submission, post-tender clarification and project handover.
- Review drawings, specifications, schedules and tender documentation, identifying technical and commercial risks, omissions, opportunities, assumptions and clarifications.
- Prepare and oversee detailed electrical and M&E cost estimates, including labour, materials, plant, subcontractors and project-specific preliminaries.
- Issue and manage supplier and subcontractor enquiries, technically and commercially evaluate quotations, and support procurement and value-engineering decisions.
- Provide commercial management across live projects, including budgets, cost tracking, valuations, variations, forecasting, subcontractor accounts and final accounts.
- Work closely with Contracts Managers and site teams to ensure estimates and commercial decisions reflect practical project delivery, programme requirements and installation methodologies.
- Attend client, consultant, tender and commercial meetings as required, supporting negotiations and maintaining strong professional relationships.
- Ensure a structured handover from tender to operations and use project feedback, final costs and lessons learned to improve future estimating accuracy and commercial performance.
- Provide leadership, technical guidance and mentoring to other QS / estimating resources while maintaining accurate commercial records, tender registers and management information.
Required Experience
- Minimum 7 years' relevant experience within electrical contracting, M&E contracting, quantity surveying, estimating or a closely related commercial role.
- Proven experience preparing and managing electrical and/or M&E tenders and commercially supporting projects from pre-construction through to final account.
- Strong technical understanding of electrical installations and construction methodologies; candidates must be capable of interpreting drawings, specifications and project requirements rather than operating solely from quantities.
- Experience across industrial, commercial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, food manufacturing, E&I or similar technically demanding environments would be highly desirable.
- Previous experience in a senior role, mentoring colleagues or taking ownership of an estimating / commercial function would be a strong advantage.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Strong electrical technical knowledge and commercial awareness are essential.
- Relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline is desirable. Candidates with an electrical trade background and significant relevant estimating / commercial experience will also be considered.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, labour requirements, material costs, installation methods, testing, commissioning and project delivery.
- Ability to carry out and review detailed take-offs from electrical schematics, layouts, specifications and coordinated M&E information.
- Strong numerical, analytical, negotiation and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and comfortable using estimating, digital take-off and project/commercial management systems.
- Excellent communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to work effectively with Directors, Contracts Managers, site teams, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders, projects and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and commercial focus.
- Broader M&E, Building Services, E&I, BIM or multidisciplinary project experience is a distinct advantage.
- Full clean driving licence.
