Job summary

Astute is recruiting a Solar Technical Engineer to deliver technical support for large-scale solar PV projects across Ireland. You will work across design, planning, procurement, construction and commissioning, reporting to the Technical Manager.

Key requirements include a degree in Electrical/Renewable Energy engineering, 2–5 years' solar/renewable experience, and strong knowledge of PV systems, with experience in AutoCAD and PVsyst. Ireland/EU standards familiarity is essential.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 2–5 years engineering experience in solar PV or renewable energy projects, ideally EPC.
  • Strong technical knowledge of solar PV systems including modules, inverters, transformers, cabling and SCADA.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of preliminary and detailed engineering designs, layouts and single-line diagrams for large-scale solar PV systems.
  • Review and coordinate technical documentation including specifications, datasheets and engineering drawings.
  • Ensure designs comply with Irish and EU standards, planning conditions, grid codes and health and safety requirements.
  • Liaise with DNOs and ESB Networks regarding grid connection designs and commissioning requirements.
  • Carry out site inspections and provide engineering support during construction and commissioning.

Job description

Astute's Power Team is partnering with a leading renewable energy provider with a strong commitment to professional development and sustainability, to recruit a Solar Technical Engineer for its Ireland operations.

The Solar Technical Engineer role offers the opportunity to support the technical delivery of large-scale solar PV projects across Ireland, working across design, planning, procurement, construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities and duties of the Solar Technical Engineer role

Reporting to the Technical Manager you will:

  • Support the development of preliminary and detailed engineering designs, layouts and single-line diagrams for large-scale solar PV systems.
  • Review and coordinate technical documentation including specifications, datasheets, method statements and engineering drawings.
  • Ensure designs and project works comply with relevant Irish and EU standards, planning conditions, grid codes and health and safety requirements.
  • Liaise with DNOs and ESB Networks regarding grid connection designs, protection settings and commissioning requirements.
  • Carry out site inspections and provide engineering support throughout construction and commissioning activities.
  • Support energy yield assessments, cable sizing, equipment selection and system optimisation.
  • Work with QA/QC and EHS teams to ensure technical quality, compliance and safety standards are maintained.
  • Prepare technical documentation for O&M handover, including as-built drawings and commissioning reports.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement across projects, including supporting BESS and hybrid energy system integration where required.
Professional qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 2-5 years' engineering experience within solar PV or renewable energy projects, ideally with EPC experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of solar PV systems, including modules, inverters, transformers, cabling and SCADA.
  • Working knowledge of Irish/EU standards and regulations, including ET103, IEC standards and ESB Networks connection requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, PVsyst and Microsoft Office, with MV/HV grid connection, protection studies, BESS or hybrid energy experience desirable.
Personal skills
  • Technically minded with strong attention to detail and a structured approach to engineering delivery.
  • A strong communicator, able to work effectively with internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers and network operators.
  • Proactive and solutions-focused, with the ability to identify and resolve technical issues during project delivery.
  • Safety-conscious, organised and comfortable working across multiple projects and site environments.
