Apple is seeking a Compute Site Reliability Engineering Manager in Ireland to lead a team of 6-8 senior SREs and own the roadmap for virtualization and container platforms powering services at scale.

You will own SLOs/SLIs, drive incident response excellence, and partner with engineering leadership to ensure uptime and seamless growth for iCloud, Maps, and more. This role requires strong leadership and hands-on cloud expertise.

  • Participate in the on-call rotation, lead incident response and operational excellence, while improving the on-call experience for the team

Description

Apple Service Engineering (ASE)'s Compute team is seeking highly motivated individual with strong technical and communication skills to join us in on our quest to build and enhance massive clusters hosting Virtual Machines, Containers and associated infrastructure that can scale to meet the demands of Apple's Services offerings. You will work with world‑class engineers on core components of Virtualization and Containerization technologies, customize it to help fit Apple's diverse needs, and engage with the upstream community to drive Apple's requirements.

Ultimately, you will help build the platform that delivers our applications at scale to our end users. As a Compute Site Reliability Engineering manager, you will be leading a team responsible for providing the platform for mission‑critical cloud systems to maintain constant uptime, scale seamlessly, and allow for new applications and services to flourish.

Responsibilities
  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of 6-8 senior Site Reliability Engineers, including hiring, performance reviews, career development, and succession planning
  • Set technical direction and roadmap for the team's owned platforms/services in partnership with engineering leadership
  • Own SLOs/SLIs and error budgets for the team's owned services, and drive accountability when budgets are breached
  • Participate in the on‑call rotation as an active member of the team, leading by example in incident response and operational excellence, while continuously identifying opportunities to make the on‑call experience better for the team
Minimum Qualifications
  • Extensive Leadership in Cloud Computing: In depth experience building and leading high‑performing engineering teams, with a deep focus on cloud computing and hands‑on experience across public and/or private cloud environments.
  • Large‑Scale Infrastructure Management: Proven ability to manage enterprise services in large-scale *nix environments and operate multi‑tenant infrastructure as a managed service, demonstrating a strong understanding of cloud architectures, system design and performance optimization.
  • Team Development & Operational Excellence: A strong desire to build, grow, and mentor teams, coupled with a philosophy of continuous improvement, a strong sense of ownership, and a commitment to fostering transparency.
  • Collaborative & Technically Proficient: Highly skilled at working cross‑functionally to ensure project success, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a solid technical background in Engineering or Computer Science.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Automation advocate - you truly believe in removing operational load via software
  • Design and deploy VM and container infrastructure using platforms such as KVM, Qemu, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with Openstack or Cloudstack, Puppet or Chef
  • Experience with Kubernetes
