Job summary

Medtronic Ireland (Galway) seeks a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, verify, and maintain software for life-saving medical device products. You will work with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions and provide technical leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline with 4+ years in software engineering.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Proficiency in two or more technologies listed (XML, C++, Java, JavaScript, C#, .NET, Python, HTML).
  • Experience with software design, code review and verification activities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and verify software for medical device products in IEC 62304.
  • Collaborate with product, systems, test, and architecture teams to define solutions.
  • Lead software development activities including estimation, planning, and execution.
  • Conduct technical reviews of requirements, architecture, and source code.
  • Mentor and support engineers with best practices in software engineering.
  • Develop and maintain software using modern languages, frameworks, and tools.
  • Drive improvements to quality, efficiency, and team effectiveness.
  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of compliant software.
  • Utilise AI-assisted tools to accelerate implementation and debugging.

A Day in The Life Of:

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will contribute to the design, development, verification, and maintenance of software for medical device products. You will work closely with cross‑functional engineering teams to deliver high‑quality software solutions while providing technical leadership, mentoring, and support for continuous improvement initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and verify software for medical device products in compliance with applicable software development standards, including IEC 62304.
  • Collaborate with product, systems, test, and architecture teams to define technical solutions and deliver project objectives.
  • Lead software development activities, including effort estimation, planning, and technical execution across project phases.
  • Conduct technical reviews of requirements, architecture, design documentation, source code, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Mentor and support software engineers through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and software engineering best practices.
  • Develop and maintain software using modern programming languages, frameworks, and development tools.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance software quality, development efficiency, and team effectiveness.
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of compliant, high‑quality software products.
  • Utilise AI‑assisted tools to accelerate implementation, code review, and debugging; holding AI‑generated contributions to the same quality and safety bar as hand‑authored code
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (Level 8) in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline and a minimum of 4 years of relevant software engineering experience; or an advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant software engineering experience.
  • Experience developing software using established software development lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies and Test‑Driven Development (TDD).
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following technologies: XML, C++, Java, JavaScript, C#, .NET, Python, or HTML.
  • Experience participating in software design, code review, and software verification activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for medical devices.
  • Knowledge of software development standards and regulatory expectations applicable to medical device software.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, or guidance to software engineering teams.
  • Experience working within cross‑functional product development environments.
  • Experience developing reusable software frameworks, components, or design patterns that improve development efficiency.
