Job summary

Medtronic Ireland is seeking a Senior Software Engineer within PCS, developing software for implantable cardiac devices. You will contribute across the full SDLC, work with embedded, mobile, and cloud-based components, and shape architecture for scalable, secure solutions.

Ideal candidates have 4+ years in embedded C, RTOS, ARM Cortex, and a passion for reliable medical software. This full-time role offers a competitive salary in Ireland and eligibility for Medtronic Incentive Plan.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Level 8 NFQ) in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline with 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on embedded software design, development, debugging, and testing.
  • Proficiency in C for multi-threaded embedded software with async and sync code.
  • Experience with RTOS and embedded debugging tools (e.g., JTAG).
  • Collaborative mindset and proven ownership of shipped features.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, debug and document integrated solutions for embedded medical devices.
  • Contribute to architecture to enable secure, scalable software and communicate decisions to leadership.
  • Develop reusable patterns and drive team velocity.
  • Lead features through the full SDLC with ownership and code reviews.

As a Senior Software Engineer within PCS organization, you will be involved in developing the software ecosystem supporting Medtronic implantable cardiac devices and will operate in all phases and contribute to all activities of the software development process. Medtronic PCS teams develop the next generation medical technologies that save lives, improve quality of living for millions of patients across the world. The team works with various software technologies in application software, network software, mobile software, BT/BLE communication software, and embedded software for management and control of implantable medical devices. The team is seeking a proactive, self‑motivated, and highly skilled software development engineer to lead the charge in building the next generation of CRM solutions. This role demands innovative thinking, a strong background in cloud‑based software development, and a passion for creating robust, scalable systems that drive exceptional user experiences. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the architecture and development of cutting‑edge PCS software, collaborating with cross‑functional global teams to deliver impactful solutions.

A Day in The Life Of:
  • Design, implement, test, debug and document integrated solutions and enhance existing components for Design, develop, and test software for class I, II and III medical devices. You will ensure that software meets the business needs, while in compliance with applicable regulations and processes.
  • Contribute to the design and architecture to enable secure, scalable, and maintainable software and clearly articulate the implications of design/architectural decisions, issues and plans to technology leadership.
  • Develop reusable patterns and encourage innovation that will increase team velocity.
  • Demonstrate ownership of software features and drive development of the features through SDLC.
  • Conduct design and code reviews to ensure code developed meets or exceeds coding best practices guidelines, unit testing, security, and scalability and maintainability guidelines.
  • Contribute and apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts to solve complex technical problems.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives for the software team. This includes recognizing areas for improvement as well as working with others to develop and document process improvements.
  • Collaborate on the design with other team members and product owners, both inside and outside of the team and with internal and external partners located across various geographies.
Key Skills & Experience
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (Level 8 NFQ) in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline with a minimum of 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Hands‑on engineering experience of embedded software design, development, debugging, and testing.
  • Proven Proficiency in using C programming to develop multi‑threaded embedded software applications with both asynchronous and synchronous code.
  • Experience working with real‑time operating systems (RTOS) and using embedded debugging tools such as JTAG debuggers etc.
  • A collaborative mindset. You are energized by fast‑paced environments, proactive communication, and working closely with cross‑functional teams.
  • A track record of ownership. You have consistently shipped impactful features.
  • Demonstrated experience owning your work and getting stuff done.
  • Excitement, passion and curiosity about our mission of connecting the world’s health data and improving patient outcomes.
While not required, familiarity with the following tools and domains will give you a strong edge:
  • Experience with communication interfaces such as BLE, USB, and other protocols.
  • Experience implementing cybersecurity solutions, including TLS and certificate management.
  • Experience working with ARM Cortex processor family and related development and debugging tools.
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Java.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, static code analysis tools and automated unit test environments.
