Job summary

Tyndall National Institute is seeking a Senior Engineer II to advance photonic packaging and process development for next-generation photonic/electronic systems. The role emphasizes developing advanced packaging processes, transitioning to scalable manufacturing, and leading technical projects with cross-disciplinary teams.

You will mentor engineers and researchers, contribute to strategic programmes, and collaborate with academic and industrial partners to secure future funding opportunities

Qualifications

• Master’s degree with typically eight years academic/industrial experience.
• Strong technical expertise in photonic packaging technologies, including optical assembly and active alignment.
• Experience in cryogenic photonic packaging and advanced micro-optic integration.
• Experience managing technical projects and leading multidisciplinary teams.
• Evidence of growing a research/engineering group and mentoring junior staff.
• Contributed to large-scale proposals, alliance-building and technical leadership.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership in photonic packaging, process development and integration technologies.
• Lead development of low-loss cryogenic packaging solutions and micro-optic integration.
• Manage projects with clear milestones and high-quality outcomes.
• Develop scalable packaging processes focusing on automation and manufacturability.
• Drive proposals and partner coordination for major funding opportunities.
• Mentor engineers, researchers and students within the group.
• Ensure alignment with the Tyndall Quality Management system and health & safety standards.
