Job summary

AIR Sligo, a global automation company, seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and implementation of automated equipment. You will work in a highly technical, collaborative environment on challenging projects, from concept through validation, with emphasis on safety and EU compliance.

The role requires a degree in engineering, 4+ years in automation or machine design, and strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks). Travel and self-motivation are important to drive milestone delivery.

Qualifications

  • Degree in an engineering discipline and solid background in automation projects.
  • Excellent communication to convey technical direction and issues daily.
  • Proactive and detail-oriented with ownership to meet milestones and timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with design team to translate customer requirements into innovative concepts.
  • 3D design of mechatronic equipment including mechanisms, transfer systems, servo systems, robotics, pneumatics, electrical equipment and guarding.
  • Participate in build and debug to ensure designs meet performance specs.
  • Guide machine build technicians to realise designs and ensure customer goals are met.
  • Design and implement process improvements for existing automation equipment.
  • Prepare detailed tooling drawings and pneumatic schematics.
  • Liaise with suppliers for component procurement.
  • Communicate requirements and deliverables to customers throughout the project.
  • Prepare safety risk assessments and FMEAs.
  • Develop machine documentation to meet EU standards.
  • Meet project delivery deadlines.

Overview

AIR Sligo, part of the global AIR Group is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to excel in the field of automation. AIR Sligo have been providing custom designed automation solutions to leading manufacturing companies globally since 2005 and have a proven track record of providing innovative and flexible solutions. A successful candidate will work on challenging, innovative projects within a highly technical and collaborative working group. As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for the design and implementation of automated equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work within the design team to develop innovative concepts from customer requirements
  • 3D Design of Mechatronic equipment including mechanisms; transfer systems, servo systems, robotics, pneumatics, electrical equipment and machine guarding systems
  • Hands on involvement at the build and de-bug stage to ensure designs meet performance specifications.
  • Ability to take responsibility for large projects and manage cross functional terms through the life cycle of a project
    • Give guidance and direction to machine build technicians to help them realise designs
    • ensure that the customer end goals are being achieved.
  • Design and implement process improvements for existing automation equipment
  • Prepare detailed tooling drawings and pneumatic schematics
  • Liaise with suppliers for component procurement
  • Liaising with customers on requirement specifications and project deliverables
  • Preparing detailed safety risk assessments and FMEAs
  • Development of machine documentation to meet EU standards
  • Meeting project delivery deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills are vital as you will have to work within a technical team and be expected to communicate on job specification and issues etc. that are occurring on a day-to-day basis.
Key Requirements
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 4 years relevant experience including:
    • Involvement in significant automation projects with responsibility for design sign off, installation and commissioning
    • Extensive experience in a machine design role
  • Strong experience using 3D CAD applications e.g. SolidWorks
  • Excellent communication skills are vital to communicate effectively on job specification, technical direction, and issues daily.
  • Must be a self-starter with good attention to detail, willing to take ownership and responsibility to realise project milestones and timelines.
  • Must be keenly interested in engineering technology and remaining knowledgeable about the cutting edge of automation technology.
  • Project management experience advantageous
  • Proven track record in problem solving and delivering solutions
  • Demonstrate ability to take initiative and be innovative
  • Current driving licence and able to travel as required
