Job description

Shape a better world through the power of light

At Arup, our lighting team combines creativity, technical excellence and evidence-based design to create places that are beautiful, sustainable and centred around people. We believe daylight is one of the most powerful design tools available - enhancing wellbeing and shaping memorable architecture.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Lighting Designer with expertise in daylight to join our team. You’ll work alongside architects, engineers, sustainability specialists and fellow lighting designers on some of Europe’s most ambitious projects, helping clients realise integrated lighting solutions from concept through to delivery.

The Opportunity

As a Lighting Designer, you will play a leading role in developing daylight strategies that influence architectural design from the earliest stages. You’ll combine technical analysis with creative thinking to deliver practical, sustainable and innovative solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects.

You’ll also contribute to the wider lighting team, ensuring daylight and electric lighting are considered as a unified design discipline.

In this role you will:

Lead lighting design and daylight analysis across multidisciplinary projects.

Develop integrated strategies for daylight, electric lighting, glare, solar access and visual comfort.

Design electric lighting concepts, layouts and specifications from concept to delivery.

Produce clear technical reports, drawings, schedules and design notes.

Present design ideas and technical findings to clients and project teams.

Mentor junior team members and help build our wider lighting design capability.

Work with Arup’s global lighting network to share knowledge across daylight and electric lighting.

We’re looking for someone with:

Degree in Architecture, Building Engineering, Environmental Design, Lighting Design or a related discipline.

Significant experience delivering daylight consultancy within the built environment.

Strong understanding of daylight metrics, visual comfort and building performance.

Experience using relevant software such as Radiance, ClimateStudio, Ladybug Tools, Rhino/Grasshopper, IES VE or equivalent. Whilst knowledge across a range of these topics is useful, the ideal candidate will have demonstratable Radiance skills.

Excellent written communication and report-writing skills.

Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to clients and multidisciplinary teams.

A collaborative mindset with enthusiasm for mentoring and knowledge sharing.

Chartered status or progress towards professional accreditation would be advantageous.

What you’ll bring

You’ll be passionate about improving buildings through evidence-based daylight design while recognising that the best outcomes come from integrated collaboration across disciplines. You’ll enjoy solving complex problems, influencing design decisions and helping shape projects that create lasting value for clients and communities.
