Job description

A little more about your role…

The Ireland Roads team is seeking a Senior Utilities Engineer with extensive postgraduate experience in a civil engineering project environment, with an emphasis on understanding, delivering and coordinating detailed designs for utility service providers. The team is growing and offers excellent opportunities for the right candidate to be based in our Dublin, Naas or Limerick office.

You lead and manage the Utility Enabling Works design interfaces to ensure all external and internal designs are completed to the required quality on major national roads, public transport projects, rail and active travel schemes including the N/M20 Cork to Limerick Road Improvement Scheme, Dublin Metrolink, public transport schemes and active travel schemes for the National Transport Authority and Local Authorities.

The right candidate shall be able to take on significant elements of design working on their own initiative with some support from the senior specialist in the relevant field. The successful candidate shall be able to obtain and analyse information, report on findings through effective communication of project proposals, assessments and intended outcomes.

  • Monitor / oversee the preparation of design and contract documentation including drawings and specifications from design consultants and in-house design teams for review, approval and issue to various utility companies;
  • Leading the interfaces with individual utility companies to facilitate the securing of agreements in accordance with the project programme;
  • Planning and co-ordination of design and construction interfaces of the utility works with other designs, and with other key team members;
  • Participating in tender evaluation, contract negotiations, and award of utility and enabling works packages as required;
  • Ensuring that all Utilities Enabling Works design meets the Health, Safety and Environmental obligations of the relevant statutory Codes and Laws;
  • Maintaining a design risk register and participating in risk workshops as required;
  • Manage all external interfaces - i.e. Local Authorities, Government agencies, property owners;
  • Management and co-ordination of relevant external third party contracts where appropriate; Work as part of an integrated team to deliver high quality engineering services for our clients.
  • Provide technical input to our cross sector multidisciplinary internal project teams supporting the delivery of transportation, commercial/residential development and environmental infrastructure projects.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

You will be degree qualified in civil engineering or another appropriate subject and be a member of an appropriate professional institution.

Required and desired qualifications, experience and knowledge also include:

  • Prior experience of successful stakeholder management.
  • Experience in Utility Works contracts is required.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively and present information clearly, concisely and confidently, verbally and in writing.
  • Strong understanding of CDE principles and delivery workflows (information containers, metadata, naming conventions, status/suitability, review/approval, audit trails and handover).
  • Experience with coordination and review practices (federation, issue/clash management, model checks and reporting), with a pragmatic approach that supports delivery.
  • The ability to manage work requirements in a dynamic environment, to tight timescales;
  • Working knowledge of common platforms used for design and coordination (project dependent): Autodesk (Civil 3D/AutoCAD, Navisworks, ACC) and/or Bentley (OpenRoads, ProjectWise, iTwin/model review).
  • An understanding of the challenges of operating effectively in a dynamic major project development environment.
