Job summary

TOM People Ireland seeks a Director – Data Engineering & Architecture with consulting experience to lead enterprise data programs and shape technical solutions for clients across Ireland.

You will drive delivery teams, develop client relationships at senior levels, and contribute to growth of the Data Engineering & Architecture practice through business development and thought leadership.

Director – Data Engineering & Architecture | Consulting Experience Essential

About Us

We’re working with a leading consulting organisation as they continue to grow their Data Engineering & Architecture capabilities across Ireland.

We’re looking to speak with experienced Senior Managers and Directors who can combine deep technical expertise with strong commercial and leadership capabilities. These are senior client-facing roles where you’ll shape solutions, lead high-performing teams, build trusted client relationships, and play a key role in winning and growing new business.

The Role

This is a consulting leadership opportunity — previous experience working within a consulting environment is essential.

You’ll operate across the full lifecycle of client engagements, from understanding complex business problems and shaping technical solutions through to leading delivery and developing long-term client relationships. Alongside technical leadership, you’ll be expected to contribute to business development, identify new opportunities, develop propositions, and help grow the wider Data Engineering & Architecture practice.

The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable talking architecture with technical teams, presenting solutions to senior clients, leading delivery teams, and developing new commercial opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and delivery of complex Data Engineering and Architecture solutions for enterprise clients.
• Shape data strategies, target architectures, data platforms, pipelines, and cloud-based solutions.
• Provide senior technical leadership across client engagements, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with business objectives.
• Lead and develop multidisciplinary Data Engineering, Architecture, and Analytics teams.
• Build trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders and act as a strategic technology advisor.
• Translate complex technical concepts into clear business outcomes and recommendations.
• Own or contribute significantly to client proposals, tenders, solution development, and sales opportunities.
• Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and develop new business.
• Manage engagement scope, budgets, timelines, risks, and delivery expectations.
• Contribute to the development of the wider consulting Data & AI proposition, including methodologies, accelerators, and thought leadership.
• Coach and mentor senior and junior team members, supporting capability development and career progression.

About You:

• Mandatory: Previous experience working in a consulting environment.
• Senior Manager, Director, or equivalent level experience within Data Engineering, Data Architecture, Data & AI, or Technology Consulting.
• Strong technical background across areas such as data architecture, data engineering, cloud platforms, data modelling, ETL, data warehousing, and modern data platforms.
• Strong experience with cloud technologies such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, with platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or equivalent technologies.
• Strong SQL and Python capabilities, with an understanding of modern data engineering practices and architectures.Proven experience leading and developing technical teams across multiple engagements.
• Strong commercial awareness with experience contributing to or leading business development and sales activity.
• Proven ability to develop trusted relationships with C-suite and senior client stakeholders.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience managing complex programmes, budgets, delivery risks, and senior stakeholder expectations.

Nice to Have:

• Experience with technologies such as Azure Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, GCP, Spark, dbt, ADF, or Airflow.
• Experience developing reusable consulting methodologies, accelerators, or intellectual property.
• Relevant cloud or data architecture certifications.
• Experience across multiple industries and large-scale transformation programmes.
