Job summary

EURAXESS Ireland is seeking a Consultant Microbiologist to provide clinical and laboratory microbiology services across acute and community settings. You will lead infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, and service development, working with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities include supervising laboratory services, interpreting tests, guiding antimicrobial therapy, and contributing to education and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Specialist registration (or eligibility) in Microbiology with the Medical Council of Ireland.
• Proven experience in clinical microbiology and infection control.
• Experience with antimicrobial stewardship and leadership abilities.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert clinical microbiology advice to multidisciplinary teams.
• Interpret microbiology results and guide antimicrobial therapy decisions.
• Participate in ward rounds and clinical consultations.
• Supervise diagnostic microbiology laboratory services and maintain quality standards.
• Lead infection prevention and control programmes and outbreak management.
• Audit antimicrobial use and update guidelines; contribute to CPD.
• Provide teaching and training to medical staff, scientists, and trainees.
• Contribute to service development and policy formation within microbiology.
