Job summary

CompuStaff Group in Galway is seeking a Senior C++ Software Engineer to live at the crossroads of software, hardware, payments and networking. You will own complex features from design to production support in a hybrid Galway-based environment.

You will work on multithreaded, event-driven systems, enhance reliability, and drive modernisation across an established C++ codebase while leveraging AI-assisted development tools to improve testing, debugging and documentation.

Senior C++ Software Engineer - Galway

Location: Galway - Hybrid
We are currently recruiting for a Senior C++ Software Engineer to join an established technology company developing high-volume point-of-sale, payments and hospitality technology.

This is a hands‑on senior engineering role for someone who enjoys working on complex C++ systems where software, hardware, networking and external devices come together.

About the Role

You will be responsible for developing and improving a business‑critical C++ terminal platform, taking ownership of complex features from design through to implementation, release and production support.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Developing and maintaining high-quality C++ software
• Working with hardware, payment devices and connected peripherals
• Investigating complex production issues and identifying root causes
• Working with multithreaded, asynchronous and event‑driven applications
• Improving reliability across connectivity, synchronisation, retries and recovery
• Designing and implementing unit, integration and hardware‑aware automated testing
• Contributing to architecture and the modernisation of an established C++ codebase
• Improving diagnostics, logging, observability and developer tooling
• Working with Git, CI/CD and automated quality processes
• Providing technical guidance, code reviews and mentoring to other engineers
• Identifying opportunities to automate development, testing and investigation processes

There is also a strong focus on AI‑assisted engineering, with the opportunity to help introduce practical AI workflows around codebase analysis, test generation, debugging, documentation and modernisation.

What We're Looking For

We are interested in engineers with strong commercial C++ experience who have worked on production systems and are comfortable getting into complex technical problems.

You should have:

• Strong C++ development experience
• Good understanding of memory management, object lifetime, concurrency and error handling
• Experience with multithreaded, asynchronous or event‑driven software
• Strong debugging and production troubleshooting skills
• Experience with networked applications and communication protocols
• Experience designing for timeouts, retries, partial failures or unreliable connectivity
• Strong understanding of software design, modularity and testability
• Experience with unit and integration testing
• Git, pull requests and CI/CD experience
• Experience working with hardware, devices or operating‑system services
• Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring or design/code reviews
• Experience using AI‑assisted development tools or implementing development automation

Experience in Any of the Following Would Be Advantageous

• Embedded C++
• Payments or payment terminals
• POS / retail technology
• Hardware or device integration
• Linux or Android
• NFC, barcode scanners, printers, USB or serial devices
• Offline‑first or intermittently connected systems
• Distributed systems and synchronisation
• PCI DSS or other regulated environments
• Static analysis, sanitizers or memory diagnostics
• AWS / cloud‑connected applications
• AI‑assisted software engineering

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging software operating in demanding live environments, with responsibility spanning C++, hardware, payments, networking and distributed services.

You'll have genuine scope to influence the platform's architecture, engineering practices, testing and adoption of newer development approaches.

Hybrid working from Galway is strongly preferred. Candidates must be based in Ireland and able to attend the Galway office regularly for hardware integration, testing and technical collaboration.
