Job summary

WSP is seeking a Systems Safety Engineer for the MetroLink programme in Ireland. You will promote safety by embedding system safety processes across the project lifecycle and collaborating with contractors, engineers, and stakeholders.

You will review safety evidence, monitor railway compliance, and lead hazard and risk management activities to ensure a safe, reliable metro system for future generations.

Qualifications

• Degree in an engineering discipline and relevant rail/metro project exposure.
• Experience leading discipline engineers through design, construction and integration.
• Proven ability to manage DB contractors and develop system specifications.
• Strong track record in project controls, reporting and risk management.

Responsibilities

• Review safety assurance evidence and monitor compliance with railway standards.
• Embed safety considerations into design, construction, testing and commissioning.
• Coordinate with civil, stations, signalling and other teams to ensure safe solutions.
• Lead design reviews, workshops and interface coordination meetings.
• Provide updates on progress, risks and mitigation strategies to stakeholders.

As a Systems Safety Engineer on the MetroLink programme, you'll play a key role in helping to deliver a safe, compliant, and fully assured metro system. Working closely with contractors, engineers, and stakeholders, you'll assess design and construction activities to ensure robust system safety processes are embedded throughout the project lifecycle.

You'll support the review of safety assurance evidence, monitor compliance with railway standards and regulatory requirements, contribute to hazard and risk management activities, and help ensure safety considerations are effectively integrated into design, construction, testing, and commissioning activities. You will

• Promote and enforce the System Engineering requirements across the wider MetroLink team.
• Review system, subsystem, and interface designs to ensure safety requirements are adequately addressed.
• Support allocation and traceability of safety requirements through engineering documentation.
• Interface with multidisciplinary engineering teams (civil, stations, signalling, power, rolling stock, telecoms, operations) to embed safety into design solutions.
• Contribute to design reviews, technical workshops, and interface coordination meetings.
• Attend meetings with different teams to ensure contractors are following up on the agreed outcome.
• Proactively monitor project progress, identifying and resolving issues, and implementing strategic solutions to maintain project momentum.
• Deliver comprehensive updates on the project's progress and status, including the identification of any risks that arise and recommend necessary mitigation strategies to minimise these risks.
• Analyse and keep up to date with safety regulations and standards both in Ireland and internationally.
• Perform additional tasks, activities or other duties as may be required or assigned as part of the role.

What we are looking for you to demonstrate

• Degree level qualification in a relevant Engineering discipline.
• Background in a rail engineering environment.
• Experienced in leading discipline engineers through the design, construction, and integration phases of a project.
• Advanced knowledge of managing Design-Build (DB) contractors and developing system and sub-system specifications that meet customer requirements.
• Proven capability in managing design resources and coordinating deliverable outputs.
• Experience of project controls, programme management, and technical reporting.
• Expertise in systems engineering lifecycle activities, including design, development, production, integration, verification, validation, and acceptance.
