Job summary

Medtronic is seeking a hands-on engineer to support prototype development and testing in a regulated medical devices environment. You will assemble prototypes, run tests, document results, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

The role emphasizes attention to detail, adherence to procedures, and hands‑on problem solving across mechanical and electrical test setups.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 6 NFQ in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Biomedical Engineering, or related).
  • Minimum 2 years' relevant experience in medical devices, product development, or a regulated industry preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype assembly, laboratory testing, test fixtures, instrumentation, and/or experimental setups.

Responsibilities

  • Builds, modifies, and assembles prototypes, fixtures, and test setups for new product development and engineering activities.
  • Performs testing prototypes and development components, including design characterization, verification, and validation testing.
  • Supports engineering in planning, execution, and documentation of tests and experiments.
  • Performs mechanical, electrical, and/or functional testing to characterize product performance and evaluate concepts against specs.
  • Conducts investigations to identify root causes and supports corrective actions and design improvements.

A Day in the Life
  • Builds, modifies, and assembles prototypes, fixtures, and test setups to support new product development and engineering activities
  • Performs testing prototypes and development components, including design characterization, design verification, and design validation testing, in accordance with established test methods and protocols
  • Supports engineers in the planning, preparation, execution, and documentation of engineering tests and experiments
  • Performs a variety of mechanical, electrical, and/or functional testing to characterize product performance and evaluate design concepts against requirements and specifications
  • Conducts investigations and troubleshooting activities to identify the root cause of product or test-related issues and supports the development of corrective actions and design improvements
  • Prepares test samples, equipment, fixtures, and instrumentation and ensures test setups are properly configured and ready for execution
  • Documents test results, observations, data, and deviations accurately and support the preparation of engineering reports and technical documentation
  • Supports the development, execution, and maintenance of Design Verification and Validation (DV/V) activities, including test method execution and data collection
  • Coordinates the preparation, packaging, labeling, and shipment of prototypes, samples, and test articles to internal and external laboratories or testing locations
  • Maintains test equipment, fixtures, and laboratory areas and assists with calibration, troubleshooting, and general lab readiness
  • Works closely with engineers and cross-functional teams to identify opportunities to improve test methods, prototypes, processes, and overall product development activities
  • Supports engineering investigations, experiments, and continuous improvement activities through hands‑on technical expertise and problem solving
  • Maintains accurate records and ensures all testing and development activities are performed in accordance with applicable procedures, quality systems, and regulatory requirements
  • Provides technical support within the department and contributes to a collaborative, hands‑on engineering environment
Key Skills & Experience
  • We are looking for a qualified person with a minimum Level 6 NFQ in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline) and with a minimum of 2 years' relevant experience
  • Experience working in medical devices, product development, engineering, manufacturing, or another regulated industry is preferred
  • Hands‑on experience with prototype assembly, laboratory testing, test fixtures, instrumentation, and/or experimental setups
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot equipment, test setups, and prototype designs
  • Ability to follow detailed test methods and protocols while recognizing unexpected results, anomalies, and opportunities for further investigation
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation and data collection
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, and cross‑functional teams
  • Ability to manage multiple testing activities and priorities while meeting project timelines
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with others; shows respect and consideration for others
  • Working knowledge of Agile, SAP, and Microsoft applications is desirable
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, measurement equipment, mechanical/electrical tools, or laboratory equipment is an asset
