Qualifications

• Lead project delivery, with emphasis on field operations, data analysis and stakeholder management and events.
• Support electronic tagging of elasmobranch species and deployment of autonomous receivers in the field.
• Facilitate stakeholder workshops and meetings and ensure smooth project coordination.

Applications are invited for the position of Research Assistant to join the Marine Ecology Group within the Coastal & Marine Systems (CMS) Research Area of the Sustainability Institute at University College Cork. The position is based at the UCC Beaufort Building, Haulbowline Road, Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, Ireland.

The successful candidate will join the Marine Ecology Group to help deliver the Beneath the Waves Project. The project focuses on filling knowledge gaps about at-risk shark, skate and ray ecology in Irish waters using acoustic and satellite tracking technology, alongside local ecological knowledge, genetic sampling, sonography, blood sampling and hormone analysis, underwater video, and autonomous underwater vehicles.

The successful candidate will support the Principal Investigator and play a leading role in ensuring project delivery, particularly in field operations, data analysis, and stakeholder management and events. This multifaceted role includes a strong in-field component (i.e. electronic tagging of a range of elasmobranch species and deploying autonomous receivers) as well as facilitating stakeholder workshops and meetings.

This role involves a significant amount of year-round fieldwork, and the ideal candidate will have experience working in research that involved working on small boats with a strong background in practical marine research.
