Alcon Ireland is seeking a dedicated R&D Technician for a 12-month fixed-term contract in Cork. The role focuses on supporting R&D Engineering activities, including equipment specification, procurement, installation, validation and molding tooling for new products and processes.

The candidate will maintain R&D equipment, participate in validation activities, and liaise with suppliers and contractors to meet budget and milestones while upholding quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Preferred Level 7 qualification in Engineering or Technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years experience in a similar technical role in Medical Device Industry.
  • Preferred 5+ years’ experience in a similar role in Medical Devices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment.
  • Familiarity with robotics, PLCs, vision systems.
  • Technical competence operating and repairing highly automated equipment.
  • Knowledge of ISO, FDA, GMP standards.

Responsibilities

  • Support and drive R&D Engineering activities including specification and procurement of new equipment.
  • Support process development, characterization and optimization activities.
  • Assist in validation documentation and risk assessments.
  • Maintain R&D Engineering equipment and utilities.
  • Set up molding machines and tooling changes with preventative maintenance.
  • Coordinate supplier quotes and on-site activities of contractors.
  • Provide first-response technical support to R&D equipment and processes.
  • Report progress to Supervisor/Project Engineer and manage milestones.

R&D Technician

We are currently recruiting a R&D & Moulding Technician on a 12 month fixed term contract in Cork.

The main responsibility is to support and drive R&D Engineering activities including specification, procurement, installation, validation and implementation of new equipment, including molding & mold tooling for the development and manufacture of new products or new processes at the Alcon Ireland site. You would be supporting the maintenance of R&D Engineering Group equipment including molding, curing, metrology, cleaning, chemical process and packaging systems.

A typical day to day would be to:

  • Assist R&D Engineering in the specification, design and procurement of new equipment.
  • Support R&D Engineering process development, characterization and optimization activities.
  • Assist R&D Engineering in all aspects of Validation document generation and execution. (risk assessments, validation assessments and execution of commissioning / validation documents)
  • Responsible for maintenance of R&D Engineering equipment and utilities equipment.
  • Responsible for R&D Molding Machine set-up & tooling changes for operation inclusive of preventative maintenance.
  • Assembly, build, installation of new equipment due to site. Identification/setup of spare parts for new or existing equipment on site.
  • Liaise with Suppliers/External Contractors to obtain quotations, method statements & risk assessments and coordinate the onsite activities of contract personnel
  • Provide first response technical support to all R&D Engineering process and utilities equipment
  • Daily reporting into Supervisor/Project Engineer on all activities and highlighting concerns early.
  • Responsible for achieving assigned project milestones for R&D Engineering activities on time and within Budget.
  • Support safety risk assessments for any new equipment and /or processes introduced.
  • Responsible for investigating and documenting process issues and report to Engineering all findings and solutions.
  • Ensure continual Quality System compliance by adherence to established and evolving Alcon QS requirements.
  • Assigned work adheres to H&S and environmental requirements.
What you will bring to Alcon:
  • A preferred Level 7 qualification in an Engineering or Technical discipline.

  • Ability to trouble‑shoot electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment issues.
  • Familiarity with robotics, PLCs, vision systems.
  • Technical competence in operating and repairing highly automated Equipment.
  • Good understanding of networks and basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with Veeva, Maximo and Teamcenter.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Good problem‑solving skills and ability to utilize problem solving techniques.
  • Knowledge of ISO, FDA, GMP standards.
