Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer for its Dublin offices. You will lead electrical design across multiple disciplines, coordinate with clients and teams, and guide junior engineers through complex projects in the Built Environment, Transport, and Water sectors.

We value experience in lighting, MV/LV distribution, BMS/SCADA, and BIM tools. The role offers hybrid working within Ireland and broader opportunities across the group.

Qualifications

  • BEng / MEng in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer status or eligible for chartered status.
  • Experience leading Electrical services on large multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience mentoring graduate engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design for multidisciplinary projects across Built Environment, Water, Transport, and Advisory sectors.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and stakeholders to deliver projects.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members and oversee deliverables.
  • Develop scheduling and reporting programs; monitor progress and budgets.

About the Business Unit

The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald’s regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross‑sector skills across five key Sectors: Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

About the Team

The MEP Team in Ireland collaborates on a wide variety of projects in the Built Environment, Transport, Water and Advisory sectors across our three offices, in Belfast, Dublin and Cork. There are also close links with our sister offices all over the UK.

Overview of the Role

As Principal Electrical Engineer, your role will include assessing and understanding project requirements, undertaking electrical design across a number of disciplines and agreeing timescales and specifications with design teams, clients and managers. Leading and directing junior staff, you will be actively involved in the preparation of documents, reports and health and safety risk assessments as well as interpreting commercial and/or contractual aspects of correspondence with or between fellow professionals on multidisciplinary projects.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Managing the delivery of the Electrical elements of multidisciplinary projects across a range of sectors including Built Environment, Water, Transport, and Advisory.
  • Working and liaising with associated engineering disciplines as part of delivering projects.
  • Dealing with and managing internal and external stakeholders.
  • Carrying out design and calculation work using relevant industry software (e.g., Amtech, IES, Relux, Revit).
  • Demonstrating technical expertise, providing in‑depth knowledge while proactively coaching and developing junior team members.
  • Developing, maintaining and monitoring programmes for scheduling and reporting on deliverables across specific projects.
  • Maximising profitability of projects, monitoring against budget, reacting and anticipating potential problems, and communicating in line with client expectations.
Areas of Expertise
  • Electrical building services design with experience in healthcare, education, industrial/pharma, water/wastewater, food processing, transportation, and data centres.
  • Lighting and Emergency Lighting for buildings (Commercial and Industrial). Familiar with electrical and lighting design packages including Trimble (Amtech), Relux, Dialux.
  • External Lighting, including roads/highways.
  • General Power and Services, including Fire Detection and Alarm, CCTV, Access Control, Power and Data.
  • MV (Medium Voltage) switchgear and transformers.
  • LV (Low Voltage) distribution and MCC’s (Motor Control Centres) including wiring schematics, SLD’s.
  • Transformers at 20kV/10kV to 400V.
  • 3‑phase and single‑phase systems.
  • BMS (Building Management Systems) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Instrumentation, Control and Automation systems.
  • BIM, AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Site experience an advantage.
  • Services coordination in buildings and for underground services.
Candidate Specification
  • B.Eng / M.Eng.
  • Chartered Engineer.
  • Experience leading Electrical services and some multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience mentoring and leading graduate engineers.
  • Enthusiastic and ambitious.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentation.
  • Ability to lead electrical elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
  • Experience of managing client relationships and expectations; attendance at Client Facing meetings via Teams.
