Job summary

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) invites applications for a part-time, temporary Specialist Medical Officer in the Medical Department at the National Blood Centre. Candidates must be registered with the Irish Medical Council and meet the listed criteria, with a salary on the Senior Area Medical Officer scale €97,771 to

Qualifications

  • Registered Medical Practitioner with the Irish Medical Council.
  • At least 3 years post-registration experience in clinical care of patients in the hospital setting.
  • Postgraduate qualification in transfusion or MRCPI or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in English language both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in use of Information Technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a high capacity for responsibility and individual initiative.
  • Experience in Transfusion Medicine Practice.
  • Understanding of Quality Management.

Job description

The IBTS is currently recruiting a part-time, temporary, Specialist Medical Officer based in the Medical Department, National Blood Centre.

The IBTS is a non-commercial state agency with responsibility for collecting, testing, processing and distributing blood and blood products within the Republic of Ireland. We are also responsible for the Irish Unrelated Bone Marrow Registry and the Tissue Bank. We rely completely on our community of voluntary non-remunerated donors to provide sufficient donations to ensure a consistent supply of blood and blood products to enable life-saving patient care. Our products and services are essential to healthcare and impact patient care across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties.

The SpMO role plays a key role in Service Delivery in MRTC liaising with all departments and staff grades.

Working within the relevant regulations, policies and procedures, current organisation of duties, in a Quality Management Framework and under the supervision of the Consultant Haematologist, your responsibilities will include: expert medical donor and donation management (Whole Blood and Component by Apheresis), Therapeutic Apheresis Service, Diagnostic (Immunohaematology) Services, Support of Clinical Transfusion Practice (Hospital Liaison), Look-back and Service Development.

You will be required to maintain registration with the Irish Medical Council.

  • Registered Medical Practitioner with the Irish Medical Council
  • At least 3 years satisfactory post registration experience in clinical care of patients in the hospital setting
  • Postgraduate qualification in transfusion or MRCPI or equivalent
  • Proficiency in English language both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in use of Information Technology
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a high capacity for responsibility and individual initiative.
  • Experience in Transfusion Medicine Practice.
  • Understanding of Quality Management.

The salary scale attached to the post is the Senior Area Medical Officer scale €97,771 to €116,950 (incl. LSI) pro rata per annum. Entry point onto the salary scale is dependent upon relevant experience.

  • A citizen of Switzerland in regards to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the movement of people
  • A non-EEA citizen who has a stamp 4 visa
  • A person awarded international protection under the International Protection Act 2015, or any family member entitled to remain in the State as a result of family reunification and has a stamp 4 visa
  • or
  • A non-EEA citizen who is a parent of a dependant child who is a citizen of and resident in an EEA member state if the UK or Switzerland and has a stamp 4 visa.
