Job summary

Blackrock Health Galway Clinic is seeking a proactive Lab Assistant to support laboratory staff with preparation, specimen handling and data recording. The role involves equipment preparation, stock monitoring, and assisting with filing and dispatch of specimens, under supervision.

The successful candidate should have a relevant scientific qualification, good communication and organisational skills, and flexibility to work as part of a team in a busy hospital environment.

Qualifications

• Relevant scientific qualification (e.g., BSc in Biomedical or related science).
• Previous experience in a similar role is desirable.
• Strong communication, organisational and teamwork abilities.
• Flexible in work practices.

Responsibilities

• Assist laboratory staff with the preparation work for tests.
• Prepare and use equipment as directed by appropriate scientific/ technical laboratory staff.
• Receive and record specimens, ensuring that samples and request forms are correctly matched.
• File and store samples as required and maintain records.
• Dispatch and delivery of specimens, reports and samples as required.
• Prepare, collect and dispose of laboratory waste, excess tissue etc.
• Cleaning of laboratory and laboratory equipment as required.
• Monitoring of supplies stocks.Reporting stock shortages to senior laboratory staff and requesting stocks as appropriate.
• Assisting with filing specimens, slides etc.
• Taking, recording and delivering phone messages as required.
• Recording of data on the laboratory/hospital computer system to include: patient data entry; production of bar-coded labels; preparation of worksheets, etc.
• Other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Hospital.

The Role:
