Job summary

Coffey is seeking an experienced Water and Wastewater Mechanical Project Engineer to deliver MEICA and Civil works across a diverse portfolio. The role demands strong technical and organisational skills, with a proven project-engineering track record and commercial acumen.

You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, manage procurement, and oversee subcontractors while ensuring safety, quality, and budget targets.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of proven experience as a Project Engineer or similar role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical systems, pumps, pipework, access steelwork, and process plant/machinery relevant to water treatment.
  • Understanding of NEC 4 Contractual requirements.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Ability to communicate well with clients, subcontractors and in-house staff.
  • Familiarity with MS Office; MS Project, AutoCAD, and Trimble Pro-Design preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and adaptability to changing project requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement mechanical solutions for water and wastewater projects.
  • Support senior management in delivering contractual objectives and client goals.
  • Coordinate with internal and external design and project delivery teams across disciplines (civil, process, mechanical, electrical, ICA, H&S, BIM).
  • Oversee selection and procurement of mechanical equipment and materials while ensuring compliance.
  • Manage and coordinate subcontractors to align with project objectives and timelines.
  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure safety and quality standards.
  • Maintain and develop client and stakeholder relationships from start to finish.
  • Promote Coffey values within the team and project delivery.
  • Resolve performance, scope, cost and schedule issues proactively.
  • Provide expertise in planning, execution, and monitoring of mechanical project aspects within budgets and schedules.
  • Prepare accurate status reports highlighting milestones, risks, and mitigations.
  • Drive health, safety, quality, and environmental procedures across contracts.
  • Ensure overall project delivery meets Coffey objectives for financial performance and quality.

About The Role

Coffey are currently seeking an experienced Water and Wastewater Mechanical Project Engineer to deliver innovative and challenging project in covering a diverse portfolio of MEICA and Civil works.

High levels of motivation and resilience, together with strong technical and organisational skills are essential for this role. The candidate will have a proven track record as a project engineer or senior project engineer, coupled with a strong commercial acumen and design knowledge. They will demonstrate integrity, a hard‑working ethic and be target focused, whilst embracing the challenges and changes within the industry. The project engineer will play a key role in the support of a team culture within their team and as part of the company.

Role Summary
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design, develop, and implement mechanical solutions for multiple water and wastewater treatment projects.
  • Support the senior management in the delivery of contractual objectives of Coffey to meet client goals and objectives.
  • Co‑ordination and liaison with internal and external design and project delivery teams in a multi‑disciplinary environment, providing commercial and technical guidance. (civil, process, mechanical, electrical, ICA, H&S, BIM)
  • Oversee the selection and procurement of mechanical equipment and materials, while maintaining compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
  • Manage and coordinate subcontractors, ensuring their work aligns with project objectives and timelines.
  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor project progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure safety and compliance with established standards.
  • Effectively maintain and develop healthy client and stakeholder relationships throughout the project from commencement to project close‑out.
  • Support a team environment that supports Coffey core values.
  • Proactively resolve performance, scope, cost and schedule issues.
  • Provide expertise in the planning, execution, and monitoring of mechanical aspects of projects, ensuring adherence to budgets, schedules, and quality standards.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of project requirements, prepare detailed project plans, and define scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • Participate in project review meetings, incorporating lessons learned into future projects to continuously improve processes.
  • Prepare accurate and timely preparation of on‑going status reports to our clients and Coffey management highlighting key milestones, risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Drive and ensure consistent implementation of health, safety, quality and environmental procedures to Coffey and client defined standards across all contracts.
  • Consistently deliver on each project to achieve Coffey objectives for project financial performance and all aspects of overall project delivery (quality control, risk management, and profitability)
About You
Essential Criteria
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of proven experience as a Project Engineer or similar role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mechanical systems, pumps, pipework, access steelwork, process plant/machinery, etc relevant to water treatment processes.
  • Understanding of NEC 4 Contractual requirements.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Ability to communicate well with clients, subcontractors and in‑house staff.
  • Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office applications is essential. Familiarity with MS Project, A‑CAD, Trimble Pro-Design is preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving ability and adaptability to changing project requirements.
Desirable Criteria
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards) is preferred.
  • Water or wastewater experience
