Job summary

Arcadis Galway is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead design delivery for wastewater treatment projects within a one-team culture, under the guidance of a design manager.

You will coordinate a multi-disciplinary team, produce mechanical design deliverables, perform hydraulic calculations, and liaise with clients, subcontractors and installation teams. The role emphasises safety, CDM compliance, and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Chartered membership is an advantage and candidate may be pursuing status.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Experience in water and wastewater design is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in project delivery and provide input at team meetings.
  • Proactive, initiative-taking and problem-solving mindset.
  • Proficient with MS Office for reports and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Produce design deliverables for water, wastewater and process treatment plants.
  • Assist in all aspects of mechanical design from site surveys to detailed design and tender pricing.
  • Produce procurement specifications for mechanical equipment; hydraulic calculations; detailed drawings.
  • Project manage third party designs and support installation and commissioning teams.

Mechanical Design Engineer - (Wastewater Treatment Projects)

You will lead in a one-team culture while actively contributing to your own skills and experience. To co-ordinate the design team to deliver the required outputs for a portfolio of projects under the guidance of a design manager.

The Role:
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who can demonstrate the following attributes:
  • Provide commitment to excellence in Health & Safety (H&S) in design, complying fully with complying fully with the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations (CDM) and all other relevant H&S legislation.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the layout and interconnectivity of typical water and wastewater treatment works processes and equipment including pumping systems
  • Strong communication skills to interact with other engineering disciplines and clients
  • Ability to produce clear and concise mechanical design deliverables across all design stages of a project
  • Ability to manage design delivery and project manage
  • Leadership skills to manage and motivate individuals to consistently deliver
  • Willingness to contribute to and develop technical knowledge networks
  • A drive to be abreast of professional development and knowledge of current and emerging technical solutions
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The main duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Design Engineer are outlined as follows:
  • Reporting to the Design Manager.
  • Part of a multi-disciplined team of engineers responsible to produce design deliverables for water, wastewater and process treatment plants.
  • Responsible for assisting in all aspects of mechanical design from site surveys of existing assets, optioneering, feasibility studies, detailed design and tender pricing.
  • Production of procurement specifications for mechanical equipment; hydraulic calculations and production of detailed design construction drawings.
  • Project managing third party designs and providing design assistance to installation and commissioning teams. Liaising with clients and subcontractors.
  • Work as part of a team to support project delivery function, embracing the ethos of a “one team” culture.
  • Ensure Design, Health, Safety, Environmental & Sustainability standards, policies and procedures are always adhered to.
  • Monitoring of design delivery performance and efficiency, adjusting and reacting as necessary to ensure targets are achieved and ensuring the MIDP is kept up to date.
  • Produce mechanical design outputs as and when required.
  • Ensure the Clients’ Technical Requirements are met throughout the design.
  • Conduct regular meetings with project delivery teams to allocate resources, monitor the plan and adjust as necessary in consultation with the project delivery teams.
  • Monitor and update Design Change Control.
  • Liaise between Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil & Structural Designers
  • Be involved in the growth and development of the company including expansion of the direct delivery model. Tasks include the development of business cases for onboarding staff, gap analysis of required resources, recruitment and structuring.
  • Provide robust leadership and a sounding board for supporting site teams.
  • Show an eagerness to learn and progress in your own career as well as the mentoring and training of more junior staff.
  • Other duties as required from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
The main knowledge, skills and experience required are outlined as follows:
  • Chartered membership of relevant professional institution an advantage but not essential providing the candidate is working towards either incorporated or chartered status.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Strong team leader & decision maker with proven experience essential.
  • Water and Wastewater design experience highly desirable.
  • Commercial experience is desirable.
  • An interest in developing a career within an industry-leading organisation.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in project delivery and provide input at team meetings.
  • Ability to use own initiative, problem solve and adjust as issues arise.
  • Good working knowledge of MS packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills with a high level of motivation.
