Job summary

Lawler Consulting seeks an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer (Intermediate/Senior) to join our Kilkenny team, delivering design for HVAC, plumbing, and building services across sectors.

The role involves leading design from development to delivery, mentoring junior engineers, and coordinating with clients and project teams while maintaining ISO‑compliant documentation. Kilkenny head office with hybrid working options after initial 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 7 degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services.
  • 5+ years’ design experience in an engineering consultancy preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead design in accordance with regulations and standards.
  • Client-facing experience and strong communication skills.
  • Experience with ISO standards and project documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical services installations for buildings across sectors.
  • Demonstrate strong technical ability in mechanical/building services design.
  • Create detailed layouts, schematics, and calculations.
  • Lead design through development to delivery and manage design changes.

About the Role

We are currently looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer (Intermediate/Senior level, depending on experience) to join our team and work on a range of projects.

This position is based in the Kilkenny head office.

Working Arrangement

Initial working commitment: Kilkenny office for the first 6 months. Working from Home/Hybrid options may be available thereafter, depending on experience and agreement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical services installations for buildings across educational, healthcare, residential, commercial and retail sectors, covering HVAC, water services, soils & wastes, gas, building automation control systems, within current regulations and design standards.
  • Demonstrate strong technical ability in all aspects of mechanical / building services engineering and design.
  • Create detailed mechanical design layouts, schematics, and calculations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project goals.
  • Independently address design and technical challenges to achieve optimal engineering solutions.
  • Work directly with clients and project engineers to define requirements and develop technical solutions.
  • Develop and agree on design processes and deliverables.
  • Produce accurate budget estimates for projects; assess contractor progress claims & variations.
  • Maintain project documentation in accordance with ISO standards, ensuring up-to-date records for mechanical designs.
  • Engage in QA audits, peer reviews and technical workshops, promoting continuous improvement in mechanical solutions.
  • Stay informed on building services and environmental sustainability design trends by attending relevant seminars, CPDs and exhibitions.
  • Conduct site inspections, prepare reports related to mechanical systems, source budget information and provide data to project teams.
  • Review mechanical service submittals, ensuring compliance with project objectives and approved designs.
  • Monitor project timelines to ensure mechanical designs are delivered on schedule and within budget.
  • Lead design from development through project delivery: answer technical queries, coordinate services, review submittals, manage and coordinate timely delivery of design changes and drawing updates.
  • Lead and mentor junior and intermediate engineers where relevant, depending on experience.
  • Assist with tender bids, including technical writing reports and preparing budget estimates.
  • Report to Associate Director / Director on project performance.
Key Requirements
  • Minimum Level 7 degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services Engineering or equivalent.
  • Ideally 5+ years' experience in design with an engineering consultancy.
  • Proven experience in mechanical engineering design in a design office.
  • Ability to lead and deliver projects in accordance with Building Regulations and Design Standards.
  • Ability to work within a team and independently when required.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, contributing to overall project success.
  • Demonstrated experience in a client‑facing role.
  • Strong communication and presenting skills.
  • Upholds ethics and Lawler Consulting values, demonstrates integrity and honors commitments.
  • Proven knowledge of mechanical system designs, including soils & waste, plumbing, ventilation & air‑conditioning, space cooling, space heating, building automation and environmental designs in accordance with Irish regulations.
  • Experience working within ISO standards and project‑specific scopes.
  • Proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, magicad; 3D energy modelling such as IES (preferred but not required) or similar.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office packages.
  • Proficient knowledge & experience of current design guides, building regulations (including BCAR process) and EN standards.
  • Full Clean European Driver’s Licence (or in the process of obtaining one).
