Job summary

National Vehicle Distribution seeks a strategic HGV Workshop & Fleet Manager to lead vehicle maintenance across Ireland and the UK. You will manage a 135-vehicle fleet with a plan to scale to 200, bridging SMT strategy and garage-floor execution.

The role requires a mechanical/industrial engineering background, hands-on hydraulics expertise, and a track record of optimizing in-house vs. subcontracted maintenance. You will drive safety and compliance excellence.

Qualifications

• Degree or higher in Mechanical/Industrial/Process Engineering with heavy mechanical emphasis.
• Proven background in managing specialised machinery or HGVs (hydraulics, complex mechanics).
• Experience with workshop management systems (FMS/TMS) and predictive maintenance.
• Ability to translate growth targets into actionable maintenance schedules and capacity plans.
• Experience leading multi-site workshop teams with safety culture.

Responsibilities

• Oversee workshop operations and subcontractor management across IE & UK to ensure uptime and quality for complex transport equipment.
• Drive strategic fleet growth from 135 to 200 units and align SMT goals with operational plans.
• Prepare data-backed business cases for CapEx and equipment updates for SMT review.
• Ensure compliance with Irish RSA and UK DVSA regulations and promote Safety-First culture.

Position Overview

NVD is seeking a highly skilled and strategic HGV Workshop & Fleet Manager to lead our vehicle maintenance operations across Ireland and the UK. Managing a current fleet of 135 car transporters with a clear mandate to scale to 200 units, you will bridge the gap between high-level business strategy and workshop floor execution.

This role demands a strong foundation in mechanical/industrial engineering, deep technical curiosity for specialised transporter hydraulics and mechanics, and the strategic foresight to optimise our 70% in-house vs. 30% subcontractor service model.

Key Responsibilities

1. Workshop & Subcontractor Management

• Directly oversee primary HGV garage operations in Baldonnell (IE) and Birtley (UK) through 2 to 3 Workshop Managers, ensuring high uptime and rigorous maintenance standards for complex, specialised car transporter mechanics such as multi-deck hydraulic platforms, winch systems, and split-loading mechanisms.

• Optimise performance across the 70% in-house serviced fleet while managing vendor relationships, quality standards, and compliance for the 30% outsourced maintenance model.

2. Strategic Fleet Growth & Market Intelligence

• Execute NVD’s strategic growth plan to expand the fleet from 135 to 200 car transporters by evaluating ongoing fleet performance, identifying operational shortcomings, and adjusting strategy to align with corporate objectives.

• Translate Senior Management Team (SMT) business goals into actionable, executable operational plans for both the Baldonnell and Birtley workshops.

3. Stakeholder Communication & SMT Alignment

• Prepare data-backed business cases and technical justifications for fleet selection, capital expenditure (CapEx), and equipment updates for presentation to the SMT.

• Serve as a two-way communication bridge—translating high-level company goals down to garage floor mechanics while escalating operational feedback and data to the Head of Logistics & Fleet.

4. Compliance, Safety & Culture

• Ensure 100% compliance with Irish (RSA) and UK (DVSA) transport and roadworthiness regulations, tachograph rules, operator licensing, and annual testing requirements.

• Drive a proactive, zero-harm Safety-First culture and promote garage safety standards across all facilities.

Candidate Profile & Key Requirements

Education & Background:

Degree or high-level qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Process Engineering (with a heavy mechanical emphasis).

Technical Experience:

Proven background in managing specialised machinery or HGVs (hydraulics, complex mechanical assemblies, custom rig configurations) would be an advantage.

Tech Savviness:

Strong interest and capability in workshop management systems (FMS/TMS), predictive maintenance tech, and emerging green fleet capabilities.

Strategic Capability:

Experience translating business growth targets into actionable maintenance schedules, capacity planning, and fleet replacement plans.

Leadership:

Track record of managing multi-site workshop managers, developing team capability, and fostering a strong Health & Safety culture.

Compliance Knowledge:

Come from an environment with a compliance culture; experience adhering to Irish (RSA) and UK (DVSA) heavy transport compliance standards and garage safety legislation.
