Job summary

JIMMY BARRY MOTORS seeks an experienced HGV mechanic to inspect, diagnose, service and repair heavy goods vehicles in Bantry, Co. Cork. You’ll ensure compliance with CVRT standards and road safety rules, using diagnostic gear and working both independently and with a team.

Candidates should have at least 3 years’ HGV experience and a recognised motor mechanics qualification, with strong English communication and a solid understanding of maintenance procedures.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as an HGV/Commercial Vehicle or Heavy Vehicle mechanic.
  • Recognised qualification in Motor Mechanics or related trade.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals.
  • Sufficient English to understand workshop instructions and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults in HGVs.
  • Perform routine servicing and preventative maintenance.
  • Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, suspension and steering.
  • Inspect vehicles to meet CVRT requirements.
  • Carry out emergency repairs and breakdown diagnostics.
  • Replace defective parts using approved workshop procedures.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and use diagnostic equipment.

Job Description

We are seeking experienced, motivated and reliable HGV Mechanics to join our vehicle maintenance team. The successful candidates will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, maintaining and repairing heavy goods vehicles in accordance with manufacturer specifications, Irish road safety legislation and Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) standards.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults in HGVs.
  • Perform routine servicing, inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, suspension and steering systems.
  • Inspect, prepare and maintain heavy goods vehicles to meet CVRT requirements.
  • Carry out emergency repairs and breakdown diagnostics where required.
  • Replace defective parts using approved workshop procedures.
  • Complete maintenance records accurately.
  • Use diagnostic equipment safely.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workshop.
  • Work independently and within a team.
Experience Required
  • Minimum 3 years' relevant experience as an HGV, Commercial Vehicle or Heavy Vehicle Mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment.

  • Mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Sufficient English communication skills to understand workshop instructions, health and safety procedures and communicate effectively with colleagues.
Education / Qualifications
  • Recognised qualification (Certificate, Diploma or equivalent) in Motor Mechanics, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics or a related mechanical trade.
