Electricity Supply Board (ESB) invites applications for a Telecommunications Fibre Professional within the Networks Telecoms Fibre Delivery team. You will install, splice, test and maintain fibre optic infrastructure across ESB Networks assets, working in substations and across Ireland, to deliver reliable, high-performance networks.

Based in Leopardstown, Dublin 18, the role requires travel nationwide, safety focus, and collaboration with engineers and project teams.

Qualifications

• 3+ years in telecommunications and working with fibre optic cables.
• Qualified in Optical Fibre Installation or equivalent.
• Full clean EU driving licence and willingness to travel nationwide.

Responsibilities

• Install fibre within substation environments and telecoms infrastructure.

Position Description

Networks Telecoms is at the forefront of utility telecommunications, playing a critical role in the reliable operation of modern electricity networks. As a key enabler of ESB’s digital strategy, the function delivers innovative and efficient telecommunications solutions that support secure and dependable energy distribution. With a strong focus on advanced technology and continuous improvement, Networks Telecoms contributes significantly to the development of smart energy systems and the transition to a more sustainable energy future. The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery, operation, maintenance and support of Operational Technology (OT) telecommunications systems across ESB Networks infrastructure.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Telecommunications Fibre Professional within the Networks Telecoms Fibre Delivery team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, splicing, testing, commissioning and maintenance of fibre optic infrastructure across ESB Networks assets.

In support of ESB's strategic objectives of decarbonising electricity, building resilient infrastructure and empowering customers, the successful candidate will help deliver the telecommunications assets that enable Ireland's evolving electricity system.

Working as part of a highly skilled field team, the successful candidate will play a key role in delivering telecommunications projects across Ireland, ensuring all work is completed safely and in accordance with engineering standards, quality requirements and operational procedures.

The successful candidate will undertake fibre splicing and termination activities, perform optical testing using industry-standard test equipment, and support the commissioning and handover of telecommunications assets. They will also assist with fault finding, maintenance and restoration activities on existing fibre networks, contributing to the ongoing reliability and resilience of ESB's telecommunications infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Install fibre optic cabling within an electrical substation environment and associated telecommunications infrastructure.
• Carry out overhead-to-underground fibre cable transitions, including routing fibre from overhead masts into duct systems and C2 chambers.
• Perform fibre optic splicing, jointing and termination activities to the highest quality standards.
• Conduct fibre testing using Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), light source and power meter equipment, and other specialist test instruments.
• Commission and verify fibre network installations, ensuring compliance with design specifications and performance requirements.
• Support fault-finding and repair activities on existing fibre optic networks.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with ESB safety procedures, environmental requirements and industry best practice.
• Coordination with third party contractors, project managers, engineers, system operators, telecommunications specialists and various internal/external stakeholders.
• Participate in maintenance, emergency response and network restoration activities as required.
• Support a strong health and safety and high performing team culture.

Experience and Qualifications

• Either a 3rd Level qualification (NFQ Level 6/ 7) in an electrical/ telecommunications/ IT discipline or minimum of 3 years relevant experience in telecommunications and working with fibre optic cables, copper network, and structured cabling.
• Certified in Optical Fibre Installation training or equivalent.
• As travel will be a feature of this role, a full clean driving license is required.
• A minimum of 3 years relevant experience in telecommunications and working with fibre optic cables, Copper Network, and structured cabling.
• Knowledge of fibre optic network construction, cable handling practices and telecommunications infrastructure.
• Familiarity with OTDR testing, fibre certification and fault diagnosis techniques.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, cable schedules and fibre network documentation.
• Strong focus on safety, quality and continuous improvement.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Full clean EU driving licence and willingness to travel to sites nationwide.
• Experience with preparation of safety documentation.
• Experience working in HV substations, utility and critical infrastructure environment.
• Experience with stakeholder engagement.
• Awareness of telecommunications technologies.
• Health & Safety experience/ qualifications.

Location

This position will be based in ESB Networks Leopardstown, Dublin 18.

The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week.
